I just want to state a few interesting points. There's a cool story pamphlet that comes with the limited edition of halo 2 called "Conversations from the Universe." I can't find my copy, I'm guessing one of my relatives stole it but let's move on. One of the entries comes from 343 Guilty Spark, and it's basically a log of what happened to him in the first Halo game leading up to his being marooned in space after it's destruction. What I thought was interesting was how he mentions the Covenant. He refers to them as an unknown race that is a level (insert number here) space faring race, lists their abilities and technological state, etc. Then the last thing he makes a note of,"Tech: familiar..." Towards the end of his journal, if you will, he says something along the lines of "thank god, a rescue ship." Judging from what I saw in Halo 2, I assume he was picked up by that Heretic Leader and subsequently taken to the Gas Giant Threshold. Perhaps making a stop on the nearby moon "Basis" before that because one of the multiplayer levels in the game features a Heretic camp on Basis. Anyways, I thought that little side story from the Monitor's(Guilty Spark) perspective was very interesting. On a final note, apparently the Forerunners have six fingers...
