Look at the Fenris... it has an anti-cap beam turret in front - how much room do you think it takes up?

The Mjolnir is way oversized - over half the size of the Fenris. Besides, this is a "next-gen" thing. :)

2 beam cannon, 8 rapid-fire lasers, 8 flak. I may swap out 4 flaks for 4 missile launchers.

This is not meant to be node blockade, where you know what direction the enemy is comig from and can concentrate all firepower in that area. This is more like a perimiter defense platform for otherwise undefended (or lightly defended) cargo sites, installations, shipyards, etc.

The highlight is the counter-rotating hemispheres. Because of their relatively high rotation speed (I'm thinking one 360 in 4 seconds), fighters will be unable to selectively disarm the platform of its turrets with anything approaching ease.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Do turrets on rotating parts turn with the parts then? I thought they wouldn't do that?

Yep. Tried and tested years ago, when I made the GTExD. Beams don't work all that well (the beam fires from the same point while the turret continues to rotate out from under it), but laser and flak cannons work just fine. You just have to make sure they are attached/linked/children of the rotating submodel.

Well paint me blue and call me Bob.....

...

No offence Bob :D

I'd imagine those beams would have to be fairly weak (SGreens or TerSlash?) because IIRC, Beams to require a large amount of space, particularly the more powerful ones.

True, but if it is an automated turret, it doesn't need room for Engines, crew, life support etc, nor does it need to waste power on them. Still, that said, I still don't think it would be big enough to hold capship killers, but it would certainly be enough to put people off for a while ;)

To get a good size of the Beam cannons themeselves, watch the Collosus Cutscene, where it describes it's weapons. Once it gets the the section where the Beams are mentioned, it'll show a rotating model. Then, all you need to do is look at the turrets in relation to other ships.

Is this for any campaign in particular?

And are you going to finish this model or abandon it when it's 90% complete like all the others? :p

Seriously now, it's obvious...

When Tom Hanks got rescued from that island he left Wilson behind. Months pass and then aliens come and visit the island for vacation. Finding Wilson as the only intelligent lifeform there (and quite enjoyable) they take him back with them and much later he falls in love and marries one of the children of V'GER.... This is probably one of his many offspring (As Wilson became quite the galactic playboy, much to the jealousy of others like Mr Solo, and Calrissian...) :p

Hmm, I'll have to check that out. The scale isn't set in stone; I kinda sized it to be reasonable according to reality: The beam emmitter ring on top has an internal diameter of 3 meters, which, when I tried to picture, was about the right size for "realism". The whole thing's diameter is almost 30m, but of course, the Mjolnir's 108m length blows that scaling school of thought out of the sky. :doubt: I''ll see what I can do.

Not for any campaign in particular, but it is the "simple" model I'm using to learn how Styxx's MAX2POF plugin works (or, as the case seems to be, doesn't work). :p

The problem with nearly all of those models you so kindly linked to (;)) is that I was never able to complete the conversion on my own - I had to rely on others, and aside from GE who gave a valiant effort at converting the "Dome of the Rock" installation, there weren't others. So the models just grew comatose.

However, if I manage to get this simple platform converted, I'll finally be able to go finish all those others. :D

The Mjolnir has the Uber Beam of Destruction +20, though, so even if you fitted it with SGreens it wouldn't be so much of a stretch. The Colossus' beam cannon were BGreens, though, so that would be a problem...

I took a quick glance at the size of the Colossus' beam cannons (will post pics later on), but when the Big C's model is scaled to 6117m in length (according to Modelview32), the beam emitters are almost as big as the Fenris' engine block. Meaning the whole beam structure would easily be as big as the Fenris. :eek2:
