Would it be possible to implement the ability to view a picture of ship in the techroom instead of a rotating 3d model? I'm aiming for a warbook like picture that shows weapon placement, internal layout and things like that to furhter increase the immersiveness factor of the interface.

Yeah, it's possible with some minor changes.  A new entry in the tbl for the ship could specify what image to use.  If it does, and the image (static or animation) exists, then it could be used rather than the model.  This change would make ships behave similar to weapons if the tbl entry is used.  If the tbl flag isn't there then it would just render the model.

If this is actually for a mod though you would be better off making it an official mod request rather than asking here.
