Stars disappearing and fading in FreeSpace The Great War with GeForce2 GTS
I'm having a problem when I enter the cockpit of FreeSpace1.  The stars start to fade and almost disappear whenever I'm not moving my spacecraft, like pitching, turning, rolling, etc..
I've just recently purchased Freespace1 and Silent Threat, and I'm patched up to version 1.06/3dNow!
I've messed with every hardware setting and adjustment within the game, and just about ALL my vid card's adjustments with no luck.
I'm running Herc. 14.10 drivers with my Hercules 3D Prophet 2 GTS 64, but I also had the problem with the nVid ref. drivers version 12.41, and Herc's 12.41 drivers.
I'm using DirectX 8..
I tried the game on another system that has a TnT2 ultra card and DX 7, and it ran fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks for any help..

Nothing to do with the card.  That was a common problem on most D3D accelerated cards with FreeSpace 1.  D3D was not uptosnuff when FS1 was released and consequently, there are bugs.

This is one that you'll have to live with.

I have the same  problem - it's on a GeForce 2 MX, though. Still sort of annoying. The stars reappear when I turn, put on afterburners, etc..

Maybe the FS1 reg tweaks will fix it. You can find them here:

Oh bugger!
Why are we talking about fs?
We won't have fs3
You canadians should manifest in front of the Volition headquarters
"We want fs3, We want fs3"

That would sure make they think a bit...

The engine still has a max texture resolution...FS2 doesn't have the limitations that FS1 had with D3D and its still limited to 256x256.  When FS2 game out, few cards could go higher, and not without massive speed problems.  The Voodoo line couldn't even do half of that I think.

No Setekh, registry tweaks do not fix the star problem.  Nothing I tried worked with that, but you can make FS1 look very very good texture wise.

Hi People,

I read the page on the registry hacks, but when I went into my registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Volition/FreeSpace, I couldn't find any of the D3D entries that were referred to.  As a matter of fact, all I have in there is my setup preferences, like "computer speed, connection speed, joystick stuff, etc.."
I'd really like to know more about this and if someone could help me, i'd be grateful..

I'm running Win98SE

What you have to do is create the new entries in the registry. Once you are in the right place, right click on the frame on the right and click on new - then pick the one that applies. Follow the tweak guide closely and it'll work.

Well, I guess by Mag's other thread, you must have been an unlucky one...

Yep, The registry hacks DO work, and it completely cured my problems with the disappearing stars. Heck, even Interplay support couldn't help me, but the entries did.
Not only do the stars shine brightly, but my textures went from mediocre to great. I wish I had found these ideas sooner.
I'm fairly sure that the hacks will help most people with the disappearing stars problem.

IceFire:
To fix the stars:

D3DLineOffset DWORD
Changes the coordinates used to draw a 1-pixel long line.
- 0: one way
- 1: some other way
- else: autodetect at startup (default)
Added this variable to the registry and set it to "1".

D3DTextureDivider DWORD
Sets the rendering routines based on amount of texture RAM:
- 0: autodetect as below
- 1: optimize for > 16 MB
- 2: optimize for > 8 MB
- 3: optimize for > 4 MB
- 4: optimize for <= 4 MB
- else: same as 4
***Added this variable and set it to "1".

D3DUseLargeTextures DWORD
- 0: use 256 as max textures size (default)
- else: max size the card can use as the max
***Added this variable and set it to "1".

These are the three that I added to my registry. Good luck.
