Strictly speaking, Grunge was very very little to do with classic metal, it's never 'really' been mainstream If anything, Pearl Jam and Nirvana were 'fake' grunge, and STP and Mother Love Bone were far more along the 'original' style of grunge, (MLB was more or less the Daddy of them). 'Grunge' was more along the lines of Jazz-Rock than the Punk styles of Nirvana etc.

I suppose if I had to name what I thought severely damaged the Rock market almost to the point where it wasn't taken seriously, it could be summed up in 2 words : Bon Jovi.

I've seen them twice myself, the music they do isn't bad, and at least they play their own instruments, except for the Bass Player, but people automatically thought that anyone with a leather jacket with 'Slayer' on it, must naturally be a Bon Jovi fan as well. You wouldn't believe how many 'classic' rock-fans stopped wearing leather jackets etc for that exact reason
