Hello to all. I am new to this site but not to the world of Freespace. I downloaded FS2 open and I love it. One problem though, when I went to use Fred2_open 3.5.5 I received the following error.

Error: Can't open palette file
File:E:\projects\Freespace\scp\fred_upgrade\code\Palman\PalMan.cpp
Line: 342

Call stack:

The file version is 1.0.0.1. If anyone could tell me where to get another version or how to fix this error I would greatly appreciate. Thanks for your time.

:welcome:

sorry aboot the sloppy state of the forums, the admins had a field day with the "delete forum" button and April fools.  don't worry there's backups

The most recent Fred2 build is version 3.6.5 (yours is a year old)
http://www.penguinbomb.com/phreak/fso_builds/fred2_open_r_03242005.zip

Since you're running 3.5.5, i seem to doubt you're running the newest SCP version.  The official 3.6.5 installer is here

where did you get FS2?
cause if it is Home of the Underdogs, then there are some things you need to know......

Yeah man, I got it from HotU. What's up?

Well, first off, the HotU version is incomplete.  The community was going to give them a better rip, but I don't know what happened to that.  The first place I'd point you to is the General Freespace forum, and the Freespace FTP.  That's got most of the files you're missing.  I believe Karajorma's FAQ should answer most questions about getting FS2 to a full and fully functional install.

I have all of the missing files installed. This error keeps to referring to a folder which does not exist on my hard drive. Could this be the problem? Just to be sure I am re-downloading everything into a different folder because the other was waaayyy too messy and I have nothing better to do.

Maybe this will fix the problem, but more feedback is gladly accepted.

If you're refering to this:
Quote
File:E:\projects\Freespace\scp\fred_upgrade\code\P
then no.  That refers to the path where the code was stored by whoever compiled your current version.

You did clean out data when you got the good files like you were supposed to, right?

Yes. I followed the instructions to the "T." But like I said that folded was pretty messy, so I may have missed one step.

Does anyone know of a debug build of Fred that's anywhere close to recent?  This error is too inspecific (other than it's failing in loading graphics of some sort) for me to make much out of it.

HubbaBubbaDude1, if you can find a debug version of Fred, try that.  Otherwise, try a clean install; you can probably just grab all of the vp's that you've got in your root directory and the Fred exe and copy them to a new location and get it to work.

EDIT: this will be much easier to address tomorrow.

I found the debug version on the link in the first reply. I got an error on that one too but of a different nature. That was when I decieded to just start over again.

Thanks for your help StratComm. I think the rest can wait till tomorrow like you said.

The debug error is almost assured to be more useful.  If we're lucky, it'll point out the exact file.  We'll take a look at it once the SCP forum gets back up.

Any idea what caused it? It would be nice to give the next person with the problem better advice :)

No unfortunately I was not able to find the direct cause because I deleted all of the Freespace 2 and related files after not being able to find it.

Sorry
