Ground Control 1 & 2
Yeah, I got the idea from the HW thread. Anyway, Ground Control and Ground Control 2: Operation Exodus - discuss. :)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Ground Control 1 is now free from Vivendi and Sierra. You can download it from Gamespy.

Edit: Timewarp. How come this only happens to me in this one forum. Seriously, the admins are messin' with me...

Hehe.

Well great games. Potentially fantastic.
The first lacked a skirmish mode.
The second is alright I guess. It just lacks that element of... fun, that you get when you replay a game.

It's only worth it for the campaign IMO.

Both of them mighty fine games, but I think that GC1 is a better game, since the control zones and LZ's in GC 2 make it more like a normal RTS. And thats what GC1 was trying to get away from was the whole resource and massive armies thing. Still, both real good games and I suggest that you people who havent tried them, go do so. Hell, their free now, what better price for two top-notch RTS games?

GC1 is free, but i could only get it to run in software mode.

GC2.... I didn't like atall; I think I played the tutorial and then shoved it back on my shelf, never to be touched again (so far).  One thing I noticed was an apparent lack of squad-level, rather than individual - control, which is what I'd actually been looking forward to.

Well, aldo, using the ctrl 1-9 buttons you can make squads.

And i liked GC1 alot better because of the limited units, and the action in 2 is a bit faster than id like, with waves of enemys constantly pouring onto you, and the rushing to capture strategic points as fast as possible kind of gets old after a bit.

1 gave you more time to plan your routes of attack or your defenses.
Put this in your profile if you know someone who is fighting, has survived, or has died from an awp no scope.

just like seventies goofballs
he's waiting on last calls
well listen method man
'cause if you leave on the last line
don't leave on the ground kind
born just a little too slow

Because of this thread, i went and digged up my copy of GC2, and started playing it. I had only played until the second mission.
So, i began playing and everything was ok untill i reached mission 10 or something. And all hell broke loose...
First, the mission is friggin impossible. They have like 3 dropships, and a ton of money. I can´t even take a breather between attacks. There´s  just too many of them.
And second, the game started freezing on me. It would just freeze up, i could still hear the sound alright, but the image was frozen, and i had to reset to get out of it. According to the support page, i might be having overheating problems, wich is consistent with other problems i´ve been having.
Anyone knows where i can monitor the temperature of my graphics card? The CPU never gets too hot, so it has to be the AGP card. How do i check the temperature of it?
No Freespace 3 ?!? Oh, bugger...

I was very impressed by the graphics of GC2 - they rival anything else of the RTS genre on the market, even today.

If you can, it should be in the control panel for your card (right click desktop > properties > settings > advanced > tab with name of your card on it). At least it is for GeForce cards, where I find mine under Temperature settings.

If you cant find it (or if your card doesnt have a temp. sensor), you can always take the case off your PC, and if you have a fan, point it into your open PC. If it no longer crashes, you can safely conclude somthing is overheating.

Yeah, but that's not squad level control, it's just unit grouping.  It's not like - for example - RTW, where you can set one unit against another as a whole group vs another whole group.  IMO that level of micromanagement is fiddly and, IIRC, the opposite of what GC1 had.

Oh, and the GC2 graphics are indeed very nice.
