ok, the aim is to have a "friendly" war  For me it's mainly a good mean to improve my rendering skills through a friendly competition, and so it is for Darkage, so sit down and enjoy the war between the shivans and the ancients   we'll begin with these 2 ships, but new challengers will surely come...

Thanx for the comments btw   mmh, just could you be more precise on what I need to improve in the lasers so I make the changes for the next render?

   I think its too solid in the middle... I know its an object but isn't there a way in MAX to make it look transparent???  Have a transparent model with a glow on it... it'll look just like a energy gun.

Actually, I'm going to be gone the next couple of weeks, but before I go, here's my critical analysis on the first picture:

I love the nice, harsh lighting and the nonoverbearing background. The placement is just right to get a good view of all the ships, and the fire effect looks pretty good, if a bit too fractalized. Moving to the important part, the beefs:

*Like I said, fire too fractalized.
*The textures on the cruiser are woefully undetailed, especially compared to the nice sharp textures on the lower-left Chimera.
*The back engine glows are a bit too rounded- they work, but rendering an actual thruster model and extending a glow around that would be even better- think volume lights for the glow.   If you do do a thruster model, use the default FS2 texture for both the main map and the transparency map, and then give them full self illumination. If you're using a current enough version of 3ds MAX, add a noise space warp to the thruster model to give it a little personality.  

Anyway, it's excellent work. I like this render wars idea, and I hope to see ALL the render gurus respond. That's an order.

well it was made in TS4 so if your useing 3ds it probly wouldn't be to usefull, try useing that new lithium program to convert the POF to MAX. and as I don't have max (though wish I did) I can't be very helpfull on what to do, but they look like glowing objects not burning plasma.

Well, the GVA Setekh is currently in for repairs after a length engagement between the dGOU Loose Cannon and the TFDx Apocalypse, but here is something I whizzed up for fun.

ok, for the Malia model, I'll try to find that lithium prog (I think there's a link in another thread)
for the bad parts: the cruiser map ---> chimera=1, Gordia=0  Hehe Darkage, I'll modify a bit the maps for the next render, no pb with that?
For the flames---> I agree at 100%. First time I tried volumetric combustion, and maybe I should have unchecked the tendril box.
For the thrusters... Well, the glows ARE volumetric lights. For the thruster flame itself, well... the chimera is in fact the model I converted for FS2, and my inability to make thrusters to work make me not to do thrusters at all for this one (and that's a pity, coz I love my chimera...I hope one day I'll find a way) I'll do thruster flames for renders, at least...
Noise space warp? mmh, I'll have to find that.
Anyway, yeah, everybody is welcome to put their own renders there, I'm willing to make this post live quite some time   Next one, I'll add the Malia and some cains cruisers... I want to try better beams than in my two precedent renders
