Things that annoy me about fred and I would appreciate if they were fixed:

  • Have to use a button to move on a different axis
  • No undo button
  • Trying to move something = center jumping to mouse
  • grid rendering either behind things or in front of them
  • very slow with hi-poly models (should use lower lods as defaults IMO)
  • No way to export/import backgrounds
  • Drastic rotational/movement speed diferences when things are on screen vs off
  • No mouselook/have to use numpad to navigate views
  • Breaks for AotD

As for the last one, it needs more investigation, as it's probably one of our slightly screwy models being silly. I'm currently using a C20050502 release build. These things would make AotD move along a lot faster, since KT and I might have to stop *****ing about fred and do something.

There is, in fact, a project underway right now to rebuild FRED with all those things in mind (particularly the Undo button).  Unfortunately, only taylor and I seem to be interested in working on it, so it's moving along rather slowly.

The performance issue can be resolved by using -fredhtl, but then you have some weird out of position rendering with models.  I'd like that issue resolved.  BTW, for those who don't know, you can use -glow and -spec command lines with FRED, though I highly advise you use them only with -fredhtl and -jpgtga.  I also haven't tried to see if -env works.

there's a giant page in the SCP internal that tells you how to compile it.  Im sure that if you plan on working on it, that Goober will give you access.

Well, it would be helpful if you downloaded an evaluation version of DialogBlocks and started porting dialogs over to XRC format.  Other than that, unless you can code, not much. :)
