does it never end?

MARIETTA, Ga. - As Garin Hughes picks through his school-lunch burrito and unidentifiable apple-pear dessert, he has a secret. Hidden underneath the eighth-grader's right leg is a chocolate cookie in shrink-wrapped plastic. That's for dessert. In the past, his parents had no clue when he bought a treat at school. Now, thanks to a new school-lunch monitoring system, they can check over the Internet and learn about that secret cookie.

what's wrong with eating a cookie at lunch?

Well if all he has for lunch is cookies that's a problem, but if he eats his nasty burrito and nasty side dishes I think he's entitled to one cookie for merely surviving the rest of the meal.

Way to miss the point. The point is that it's freaking ridiculous that parents want, and are given, this much control over their child's every action. There are already GPS devices in cell phones and what not, it seems that many parents consider their kid a piece of property, and the tech industry is more than happy to accomodate them.

I'm saying parents shouldn't care if little Johnny has a cookie at lunch and therefore wouldn't want to control or monitor what he eats.

I wouldn't get too worked up about it, the kids will eventually catch on and stock up from nearby stores etc. When the school realises that it's new system is actually reducing their income, they'll soon put a lid on it.

Eating cookies is counter-revolutionary... er, counter-patriotic, and subject to punishment for the sake of all our hard working peoples!

Da Comrade, I mean it. ;)

Or they'll raise the prices of the normal healthy food, forcing parents to pay more.

Wait a minute, how do they possible know little Garin has a cookie hidden anyway? Are they CCTV monitoring the canteen?

"Oh my God - he's got a cookie!"

Are school dinners compulsory in American schools? If not then parents could simply take the time to buy their children healthy packed lunches. It's not hot, true, but then, at least here, most schools idea of healthy is 'We strained the grease out, what more do you want?'

LOL @ Vyper, Danger! Unexploded Cookie!

That's just messed up.  It's just another step forward for the health nuts; a lot of public school districts in the US have already banned "unhealthy" junk food and soft drinks.  It's ridiculous; are you telling me that high school and middle school students don't know that the food they eat isn't the healthiest?  I can speak for myself:  I don't give a damn if my meals are "unhealthy." You only live once, and I'd rather live 75 years while eating fast food than 115 while eating cottage cheese and celery. :p

Mary Carol Eddleman looked into what her daughter at a Hoschton middle school was buying and found she was getting an extra 12-ounce can of juice each day, even when a four-ounce bottle of juice came with lunch.

"That's about 150 extra calories a day. It's one thing if she did it occasionally, but she was getting in the habit of buying it every single day on top of lunch because her friends are drinking it," Eddleman said. "They drink it down like a Coke."

wtf? 150 extra calories? that's not really alot. And the drinking it down like a coke, isn't juice better (or at least not as bad as) coke/pop even if the juice is just water, sugar and flavouring?

The problem with obesity is not, and never will be, based at school, most schools already provide a moderately healthy supply of food, with, of course, some gunk included, but they're kids ffs!

Letting parents spy on the kids won't help, all that does is increase the 'Big Brother' situation. And yes, the 'They drink it down like a coke' shows exactly what the problem is. Because everyone drinks coke, it can't be bad for you, can it? Remember, our local Coke factory not only sells the stuff, but uses it for cleaning the engines on the delivery vans, and a very good job it does too!

Of course things were tougher in the old days, the school food was terrible, and the bullying intense, you had to ask permission to breathe out after 5pm and the Tuck Shop was always empty.  I ran away, but got caught after 30 miles by the school leopard...
