bodies exloding in games? All developers now seem to want to go for realism in games, in the form of ragdoll or whatever. But in the implementation of ragdoll they have lost realism when it comes to explosives. I have nothing against ragdoll, I find it amusing and pretty realistic when, say, someone gets hit with a bullet but when some get hit with an artillery shell, they're aren't just going to be flung away. I do realize this is sometimes to keep the game T-rated, but this is also the case with M-rated games.

Oh yes, they do.

The human body, A. Weighs to much, and B. Is to fragile to stay in one piece and fly all over the place from a blast like that.

I'm not sure about that; certainly not to the extent of little tiny pieces of flesh.  IIRC, explosions cause mainly concussive damage that crushes the internal organs and bones - but the flesh doesn't tear as it's flexible.  What i believe causes the loss of limbs, etc, in explosions is normally shrapnel.

Albeit I can't find any resource on google to actually check it.

being hit with the blast may throw someone back but being hit directly with a shell will most certainly gib them

Bombs will not gib people because the explosive force travels over a full 360 arc at the same speed, so every part of the body is pushed backwards at the same time.

Large, high caliber rifles and small explosive artillery could, technically Gib someone on rare occasions, but actual 'exploding' people are very rare on the battlefield. What a charming discussion

That said, there was nothing more satisfying than firing a rocket into a mass of Imps and Zombies in Doom

I guess it is more sensible to spread that kind of destructive force around a larger area, and thus wound 6 men as opposed to gibbing one, unfortunately, in real war, they don't get back up and start running around at 67% health

Double-firing the shotgun at point blank in Half Life was rather good fun, I must admit. A good point, MicroPsycho.

Flip: Fair point, but an artillery shell delivers a vast amount of energy. A body can only take so much before it fails, particularly at the joints - the mass of the limb combined with the explosive force could easily rip the two apart.

With regards to actual "gibbing", I was reading a book a little while ago about the second world war, and specifically about heavy bombers, and there was an account from a pilot whose aircraft was strafed by a Bf-109. The top gunner was hit in the chest by a 20mm cannon shell, and it literally smashed him to pieces. So heavy machine guns and the like could well do something similar...

I don't know about humans, but I've seen a bird hit by a baseball pitch, and, well, birds gib (they also make bug feather clouds). Can't see why humans would be different, especially when you replace a ball with powerful explosives.
Anyway, who cares about that? What made Duke nukem  3D so great was Duke laughing "Mwhahaha! Piece of cake!" when you blew some alien up and you'd see limbs and eyeballs flying everywhere

i heard a friend talking about how there was a seagull that flew in front of a pitch at a Major League Game and that it was captured on film..but I've never seen it

Bird bones are actually extremely tough and flexible. They don't break really well.

Direct hit with an artillery shell? You're little pieces in the treetops (or this is what some people who have seen it happen have said). Close hit? Shrapnel will shred you up.

Call me weird, but while I find the gibbing funny, I find the ragdoll highly disturbing. You know, like the difference beteen movies were a guy will have a realistic yell of pain, and the movie where he gets a punch, gos "how!" and splatters 5l  of blood.
What we need is ragdoll gibs. You explode the guy up, and then the gibbed limbss more realisticly on the ground, arms that bend aroud the elbow while sliding from a wall to the ground,  bowels that pile as they fall down, Akira-style.
Oh damn yeah.
