Need a new shockwave effect?
Ok, ok...

I've reworked the shockwave for Trashman.

Now it fades out smooth and starts with a big flashy glow.


I hope everybody is happy now. ;)
That's it. I've to do some work for my mods again.

I'd love to... in german. :)

It's kinda hard to translate this technical stuff.
Plus I'm using german software, so I don't know how some things were named in the english versions...

Way cool. Would it be possible to create a variety of explosions/shockwaves (perhaps random, perhaps not) as different ships (possibly different types of ship) are destroyed? It sounds childish, but it'd make me want to destroy capships to see which shockwave came out! ;7

Anyway, cool shockwaves, nonetheless. :yes: :yes2:

I dont know if I posted it long ago but I tried to do a sphere shockwave conversion from Trek. It worked but the colors looked Prismatic, something about pallette? Anyway I have no clue about those things and abandoned it. Do you want me to try to find the files and then you take up the challenge Brain?

Would it be possible to use a different shockwave for different species' ships (blue = terran, current mvp = vasudan, red = shivan), and the first one in this thread for bombs and stuff?

It's been asked before (many times actually) and I looked into it.  It would be possible (and pretty easy) to expand the species.tbl to include this info for ship explosions only, and let the normal effect work like it does now for bombs, and anything else that's not a ship.  The only reason that I haven't done this already is because of the memory/bmpman requirements.  Other than that it would probably take around 20-30 minutes to code in.  Just modify the species code and shipfx_do_shockwave_stuff() to send an identifier/filename to shockwave_create() to use for current_bitmap.

Of course that's just one way to do it and have it flexible, able to still use the default if no species specific version is specified.  The shockwave code is already able to use multiple animations but it's only set to use one.  That one's filename being hardcoded.  It could be fixed to have multiple shockwaves always available but after looking at it I thought that the species.tbl idea seemed cleaner.

It took me all of 0.5 seconds to fall in love with the new blue shockwave and roll it into my VPs.  But as great as it is, it's 95 frames.  I still hate animations that large but given what it is and the fact that there is only one, I can live with it and not complain.  Having four of them would suck a$$ though.  It's been suggested to just create a greyscale shockwave and color it in game.  That would work but I think it would look like crap.  Especially after what DaBrain has done with the newest version.

Well, I'm sorry for the ammount of frames. ;)

The effect in the media VP looks very stuttery for slow shockwaves (like when a Sathanas blows up).

Well, the shockwave needs more than 10 MB ram now...
I think that's still ok, for mid-range systems or low-end systems with a good gfx card.


Anyway, I'm working on a new shockwave. It should fix that memory issue to some extent. Well, in theory. ;)

I'd like to create a real 3d shockwave.

It's probably going to be complicated, but it would require less ram. (I could just use a tile map.)

I really, really need a glow/bloom effect for this. Otherwise the shockwave will look pretty boring. And I also need ANI/EFF support for glowpoints.

I can't do it with a static glowpoint.

But I guess, this won't be possible anytime soon...
