I have played many FPS games. :p

And real life != video games.

How so?
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

People comparing war to video games. I really shouldn't be that shocked. My friends would probably say the same things said here already.

Yeah. That's the big problem with most young people these days (at least in this country), they just think war is just a video game.

Nope... well, at least I have broadband. :p

And the "correct" transliteration of that phrase (which, incidentally, is what suicide bombers shout out before pressing the self-destruct trigger) is "Allah hu akbar", "Allah" being their name for God, "hu" meaning "he (is)", and "akbar" meaning "great".

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Blame TV news.... it's strange, when they had the first reporting in WW1, and then TV in Nam, it turned generations against war.  Now, it makes it look cool.

this is....interesting. The man must have been really, really lucky if it missed all the vital organs and allowed him to get away safely, or for the armour pad to have deflected/absorbed the shot as well as it did.

Either way, he is indeed a very lucky (and judging from the story where he treated hte sniper's wounds) a very good man. Probably couldn't have happened to a nicer guy I bet.

If body armor didn't stop that bullet, it is highly improbable that he would have gotten up.

Yeah, because it's awesome to die when you have your whole life ahead of you or have to have a limb amputated or become disabled in some other way. That just rocks! No, you're right. The media isn't helping this. No one has the balls to show bloody and gruesome material like they did during 'Nam. But they sure know how to say, "War kicks ass!"

I will admit that it is amazing the guy survived. I didn't think bulletproof vests stopped sniper rounds. I wouldn't say it's cool though. The fact that this guy then arrested and treated the sniper will be all over the damn news for a week. You can be sure the military will use this in an attempt to counter all the negative publicity, proclaiming that our soldiers are heroes. I'm not going to spit on them when they return, but I wouldn't call them heroes. They're just doing their job, which is to do whatever The Man tells them to do, a job I don't agree with.

It depends on what kind of ammunition is used and also what kind of rifle is used.

If one of the "cop killer" bullets is used (which the NRA didn't want banned, but that is a different story), then you're screwed even with a bullet proof vest. They were designed specificaly to take out people with bullet proof vests.

Something like an AK-47 with regular ammunition is a different story. It has a reletively low muzzle velocity, I think.

IIRC heavy body armour - that designed to stop, say, an ak47 - are or have steel, titanium, etc plates to reinforce specific trauma areas.  Some can stop a .30 caliber armour piercing bullet - the only problem with them is the weight and potential movement restriction.

Level III or IV ballistic armour can, in theory, stop most 5.56 or 7.62 rifle rounds. Level IV plates should be able to stop certain sniper rounds (certainly not .50 cal, as far as I know there is no personal body armour that can do that) but the insurgents are most likely using smaller calibre snipers like the Dragunov or M76.
