ok, I think I've mooted this before, but it's an idea I find interesting.....

Basically, the idea is a campaign created by a large section of the community. (duh!).... of course with a single person / group who take the cirtical decisions.

I've had a couple of ideas for what could be done - this purely from a modellers perspective though;

Starfighter
(yep - it's also being done by Jonskowitz...I think)
Basically, a near future thing... every modeller interested makes a small number of ships representing their country - ditto for weapons modders.... eventually, evry FREDer possible gets a shot at making missions as defined in some overall grand plan.  (War by proxy between Terran nations in Alpha Centauri...?)

NOC (Near Orbit Combat)

Closer to a deathmatch thing than a campaign, sort of aseries of mercenary battles in - yes - near orbit of a planet.  Each modeller designs their own signature ship - possibly using adapted support ships as a 'bolt on' weapons rack unlocked in a Gradius / R-type type fashion when a certain objective is achieved (plus support ships are visible fom the player view, so you could have a sort of big weapon sticking out the front this way)... etc.  Not so great in terms of story potential, though.

Ok, these are only my ideas, and they aren't great.  But the genral idea is a new universe, which encourages creativity and fredders and modders to come forward.... plus it reduces the burden of modding, etc for the staff by distributing the workload.  In theory, the only person who'd have to be fulltime with the project would be a campaign co-ordinator or group.

So, any thoughts?  Ideas?

I'm not sure about having any project with lots of people working on it; the logistics are a nightmare, I can tell you. :) A public model exchange is something altogether different; things can be passed along, with something that small. But... well... oh well, just keep going, and I'll stand over here. :D
- Eddie Kent Woo, Setekh, Steak (of Steaks), AWACS. Seriously, just pick one.
HARD LIGHT PRODUCTIONS, now V3.0. Bringing Modders Together since January 2001.
THE HARD LIGHT ARRAY. Always makes you say wow.

Well... yeah.  Logistics is hard - I know that well enough for Reciprocity.  It's because I don;t have the time for another project that I suggested a group effort like this, I guess.

I guess it would be sort of like getting together a collection of modded things, and then setting up a way in which it could be used to build a campaign...  It hink the best way to get lots of people dedicated - albeit to a small bit of work - is to give them as much creative freedom as possible.  Hence the sugggestions of alternate universe things.  The other thing is th at I would not want the exact ideas I suggested to be made - but rather something agreed by the community.

The ideas are nice, but "community projects" have a tendency to fail around here... ;)
Probably away. Contact through email.

That, and the fact that projects with too many people are too hard to manage... specially through the net.

Well, that's what I thought the main benefit of a project with a lot of staff would be.

Oh, and don't vote for suggestions or stuff - the're just examples to illustrate my point.

I've actually seen a large scale thing like this done before in a gaming community.  They've been trying to do it, and have actually been making great progress in places like the Total Annihilation community, or the EVO/N community.
