Muh...

Jesus christ, I think all this flu medication has done a number on me. Because, if I didn't know better, I'd swear this thread was about a new Sailor Moon movie. Live action. Starring Lindsay Lohan. Written by Joss Whedon.

I think I need to go lie back down.

Re: Worst Idea in the History of Time: American Sailor Moon Live
I am not completely sure, but I think either Buffy's story or series was taken from both anime series "Ghost Sweeper Mikami" and "Phantom Quest", which have some similar points between them.

And Firefly was based on Outlaw Star because both feature a girl in a box.  Which button is the rolleyes smily again?

Actually Whedons Buffy series was a TV series based on a movie called Buffy The Vampire Slayer, lets just say its very different, and very bad.

What part of HIS CHEEZY MOVIE did you not get?  And I've seen it, it's not so bad.  Could be a hell of a lot worse.

No, that's not fair, I am not talking about just one similiraty they have, anyways it's not based, but it has some point to compare, the important ones are these:

Ghost Sweeper Mikami: The Ultimate Vampire Slayer (1994)
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (1997)

Just the title tells that the story goes around the same, here is a fragment of a review from the 3 series:

Quote
It's a great deal easier to get into Ghost Sweeper Mikami, which is actually an hour-long episode of a popular Japanese TV series from the early '90s. Mikami will appeal to fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In fact, the two shows are remarkably similar. Reiko Mikami is a mini-skirted exorcist who commands huge fees for kicking supernatural ass with the help of her staff, including a girl-happy, bumbling assistant whose primary function is as monster-bait; a patient and sisterly magic-wielding ghost; a scholarly priest who acts as the group's father-figure (no pun intended); and a good-guy vampire -- Buffy aficionados can match up the characters and decide for themselves whether or not the correlations are merely coincidental.

There is, however, one huge difference between Mikami and Buffy -- Mikami is strictly in it for the cash, possessed of an all-consuming greed that makes for real comedy in the midst of her battles with horrific beasties. In this installment, Mikami is contacted by the ghost of a feudal-era samurai, who talks her into combating the newly risen nosferatu he was unable to kill in his own time. The ghost sweepers find the vampire's resting place and are attacked, during which scuffle Mikami is scratched, her potent blood awakening the vampire. Before long, said creature is filling Tokyo's streets with zombies, indulging his acquired taste for exorcist blood with Mikami's competitors, and preparing to conquer the world.

Mikami is our last hope for salvation, if she can tap into the Love and Goodness within her. The problem is, she has absolutely zero of either. As Mikami was made for TV, the animation is a bit pedestrian -- on a par with your average episode of Sailor Moon, say -- and the comedy is somewhat broad. But the balance between the funny stuff and the scary stuff is handled so breezily that Manga would do well to acquire and release the rest of the series for Western consumption.

Ghost Sweeper Mikami: The Ultimate Vampire Slayer (1994)
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (1997)

The film was written by Whedon in 1992 so even if one was copying the other it would be the other way round anyway.

Whedon can write good stuff but it's also worth remembering that he's also responsible for Alien: Resurrection

 indeed, i don't get this whedon worship, personally, i mean, serenity was good and all, but, as you said, Alien resurrection was quite bad, depends on how one does things, really, did a poor job of aliens, capped off firefly nicely, turned a campy movie into a successful series (in terms of time aired, and spinoff), etc, etc..

ROFLMAO!

This is almost as funny as Snakes on a Plane!!

Oh, and FireFly >>>> Serenity

I saw Serenity before I saw Firefly, but I thought FireFly was much better. The film felt a bit forced... a bit rushed...
Man... if only I could have traded Serenity in for another season or two of FireFly!

Aw, damn.  For a second there I was getting amused with the idea of psychologically scarred girl and nephlyte in live action, and that geek who decided he wanted to be tuxedo mask and started throwing shrimp at monsters.

True but if you look at why Alien Resurrection was so lamentable it was largely because it was a bad concept to start with what with Ripley dying in the third movie and all.

What's the first thing everyone has said about this concept? See?

shoulda gone with an entirely new cast, instead of the quasi-lazerus schtick.

Re: Worst Idea in the History of Time: American Sailor Moon Live
Eh, I'm of two minds on A:R.  If I just take it for what it is - a straight up action movie with space monsters, it wasn't half bad.  I actually thought Ripley 8 had potential, and her and the ugly dude would've made an interesting couple.

If I try to take it as part of the series....well, man does that suck.  Aside from requiring suspension of disbelief stetched way far beyond what I was willing to (especially considering that the 'we don't add ray guns for no good reason' was what I liked about the series in the first place), it just didn't work well.  No WY, and it's missing the human aspect that helped the other movies out so much.

GS Mikami movie is from 1994, the series is from 1993, both series and Movie is based on the Manga, from 1992, the same year. There is no way not a real way to tell which was first, however, if the Manga was based on a novel or in a book, it would mean it's older...The same goes for Sailor Moon and most anime series
