Greetings All:

This is my first attempt at modding Freespace 2 ( though I've owned the game for many years ).  At this juncture all I'm interested in doing is changing some of the parameters of the weapons and loadouts in the main FS2 campaign ( e.g. rate-of-fire, damage, range, energy usage, which weapons can be loaded on which ships, etc.)

Unless I'm mistaken,  the aforementioned information is stored in the weapons.tbl and the ships.tbl files ( according to Freespace WIKI ).  However, I'm unable to locate these files anywhere in the FS2 directory.   I'm hoping someone in the community can advise me on where to locate these files, and which utility(s) I need to view/edit/compile them.  Thanks in advance.

Step 1-Download VP View.
Step 2-Extract said table files from the root VP.

Pretty much all the necessary files for FS1 & 2 are contained within VPs.  To get at them, you need VPView, unfortunately I'm not too sure where you can download it these days.  Once you have it, simply open the root VP with the viewer and extract the tables to whatever directory you want, and edit them with notepad.  To use the modified table, just stick it in the Freespace2/data/tables folder when you're done.  Note that this will override the tables still in the VP, so be careful when playing the retail campaign if you make any changes.
