WASHINGTON - A powerful Republican committee chairman who has led the fight against President Bush’s signing statements said Monday he would have a bill ready by the end of the week allowing Congress to sue him in federal court.

I would imagine moderate republicans are becoming increasingly disturbed about Bushes pandering to the fundamentalist ultra-right-wing Christian lobby, particuarly as seen with the Stem cell veto (which in itself is rather hypocritical - if he regards this as murder and says murder is wrong, then why is execution right? - and more crucially went against a huge percentage of public opinion).

Problem is that the republicans know that Bush is the biggest barrier to them getting another 4 years at the trough next elections so they are moving to distance themselves from him.

Had they done that 4 years ago some people may have actually believe them too.

That seems about right. The Republicans know that Iraq is a liability in the next eections, the huge budget deficit which paid for the war is also a liability, as is immigration. They're trying to make all the right noises to convince people that they're not all as extreme as Bush and worth re-electing. But I do think there is some genuine discontentment among the realist (or call it paleoconservative) elements of the Republican party over Bush's misplaced priorities and his contempt for what has traditionally been considered conservative ideals.

I doubt much will come of this but then again who knows. It's pathetic and yet funny in a way to see the Republican party acting as a more capable and dedicated opposition than the Democrats.

Neither murder nor homicide as crimes judge on the life taken; otherwise it'd be legal to kill, say, drug dealers.

a signing statement is nothing more that a president's opinion. it merely expresses the way he intends to inforce the law.  he could just easily not make any signing statements and enforce the law the way he chooses.  so far there is nothing really unconstitutional with making signing statements, at least until the case is brought to federal court.  what is strange is that they want this bill so they can take a _civil_ suit against him, which probably wont be able to occur untill after he leaves office because all civil suits brought against a president are postponed untill after his term.  anyway, its kind of a strange way of checking a presidents power, and probably wont pass through Congress.

It depends on what type of coup you're talking about. Sure, you've got your nice, clean, bloodless coups, but they're few and far between lately. If there was to be a coup, i'd want to see veto coup, or perhaps a breakthrough coup, so we could have full-fledged fighting in the capital between the Army and the National Guard [or something]. Think of it, MRLS platforms firing from beside the Reflecting Pool, Abrams Battle-tanks rolling past the Smithsonian. Y'know, a good, proper conflict, none of this 'bomb the **** out of 'em from afar and waltz into the capital' business we've been seeing lately.
