NO!

Well not really at least.
You can download the Launcher and Tom's build or whatever and it should work.
This stuff should be in the FAQ that MatthewPapa posted.

To tell the truth, I don't like Tom's build that much either. :nervous:

I spent a couple hours last time FS2Netd was up trying to get it to work, but it never did. With FSO, it works fine. I didn't even need to make a clean installation.

I can't download the multi config file...

I hit the link and get this:

66.25.7.157

Any ideas?

This year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address occurred during the same week.  This is an ironic juxtaposition of events--one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication, while the other involves a groundhog.

Just stick that in the right spot in the multi readme then?

Yep. Simply rightmouse the link and choose save as rather than clicking on it. It's a text file and your browser realises that so it displays it rather than downloading it

LOL cobra... first off i have never had a random stats toss so it must be your machine and secondly you guys, toms is probably the best build for multi since it DOESNT HAVE MULTIPLAYER PROBLEMS. on the other hand you have SCP which is full of multiplayer bugs and no one fixes them, they just pile more **** onto the problems making it worse. I mean, you cant even play multi with 3.6.9 'cause it simply wont work with netd

The reason there are multi-bugs in recent builds is because no one bug tests multi-player in them because they're all using that ancient crappy build.

Bollocks. 3.6.9 works fine with FS2NetD. We've been testing the Galactica mod with it.

As for bugs There are currently a grand total of two unresolved multiplayer bugs in Mantis. Neither of them are crashes or anything that should be more than an annoyance in standard FS2 multiplayer.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I can not fix bugs I don't know about. Neither can Taylor or Kazan (Both of whom have worked on fixing multiplayer bugs this week). With a few exceptions from the BSG and SoL teams I get the feeling that I'm the only one actually working on finding bugs for multiplayer. I don't have a problem bug hunting for multiplayer because I want make sure that BSG multiplayer is as much fun as possible and stability is important to that.

That's why I said that Tom's Build was a sign of shortsightedness in the multiplayer community. You've done no work in reporting the bugs in FS2_Open and then say thats why you should use a build that is basically Freespace 1999. As for no one fixing bugs that's patently absurd. I've fixed several myself already.

If the multiplayer community don't want to help me fix bugs that's fine. I'll fix any bug I come across while working on BtRL. Beyond that you guys are on your own. If you don't submit the bugs to Mantis I'm not even going to look at them.

Whih is another thing I hate about Tom's build. These people cling to it like its pure and bugless. FS2's multi code wasnt perfect as it was. I remember havving numerous issues on the vanilla game. And then they use it as an excuse to dismiss and badmouth the coders working in their spare time to make the game better. They find a single bug and get huffy about it, say the coders dont know what they are oing/arent fixing them and then storm back to Tom's build.

Just reaks of arrogance to me. Especially with the vulgarities and eScreaming.

One of the problems in using FS2 Open for multi is the diversity of different builds, VPs, command line attributes, installation methods etc..
Each player has their own combination of these, which results in a huge heap of variables. Often you are not sure whether to expect the game to work or not, which is discouraging.
Also, I have to admit that this complexity has a negative psychological effect on my motivation to create bug reports -- "oh darn, I've no clue what input would be required to reproduce this fault, and most likely I don't even have access to that information".

When something "strange" happens in a multi game, one starts to think stuff like:

- is it a problem on the host side connection?
- was there a problem in my connection?
- bad connection of some other player causes this?
- does the host have a fuxored setup, hardware?
- is there something wrong on my setup, hardware?
- is it some sort of an incompatibility issue between participants ;) ?
- is there something going on with the FS2NetD server?
- and so on, and so on..

And on top of this come the possible bugs in FS2 Open.

I understand the frustration SCP team feels, but it is also understandable that many of the multi ppl resort to Toms build, just in order to make things simple and to reduce the number of unknowns possibly killing the fun. In case of SCP, one doesn't even know what could possibly affect the success of a multi game and what can not.

Alltogether, to solve some of these problems, I think more uniformity is needed in the way FS2 Open is used in multi - how to do that, I've got no idea.
Badmouthing etc. towards the SCP team is of course a silly thing to do, but I'd like to see that more like a personal attribute of certain people, rather than a standard :)
