Re: Help a kid start modding... PLZ
Freespace 2 is freely distributed on the internet. And if you want to mod, I really suggest you get Freespace Open :)

Re: Help a kid start modding... PLZ
I'm also a noob into this field basically, but having the wilingness to learn, ask questions, and
the resolve to keep going is what will get you your final desired result.

A lot of people just jump into modding thinking it will be easy to make their own world
in a couple days.... that's simply not the case.

LithUnwrap seems to be the main free tool for the UVmaps and application of a texture,
which is the graphics or skin on the ship. A model by itself is just blank.

You'll certainly need a regular 2D (two dimensional) picture editor, most people will
go with Photoshop - but that's costly. There's a free program that's very similar called The GIMP. There's also a version of that program that is made to look like Photshop - which I'd suggest that just for ease of use.
It's here - http://www.gimpshop.net/
Called GIMPshop.

After playing around with most of the freeware, I prefer 3DSMax 7 over them all. But as others
have said here - freeware can get you want you want.

I would very much suggest trying to retexture (aka change the graphics) on a existing ship
from Freespace2 Open before making your model from scratch. That may sound like a backwards
way of going about things - bit it will teach you a portion of he process.

Re: Help a kid start modding... PLZ
Someone's gotta do it....

Gunnery control, target Titan!  FIRE!!!

:welcome:

This is Captain Trayus "Bloodloss" Tren of the Battlecruiser Night Terror, welcome to the Hard Light Productions facility. Current topside temperature is -200 Degrees Centrigrade. Currently enroute to the main station hub.

In case of emergency, plasma rifles are kept in the lockers up front, but these can only be opened by [v], an Admin, or a hyper-intelligent shade of the color blue.  There is a flamethrower for your use, but due to budget cuts, it is filled with holy water, effective only if you encounter zombies (and you will..... :nervous:) In case you end up going through the vents there is a good chance you'll encounter Carl, our Shivan mascot. Just give him your lunch and you'll be fine, otherwise be assured you'll have a quick and relatively painless death.

Do not say the letters 3, S, and F in reverse order or make mention of the great blasphemer who is the creator of the Battlecruiser 3000 series and goes by the initials D.S..  If you are caught doing either of these, we will feed you to an0n.

Feel free to boost...er.....select a ship of your own while you are here, and watch out for additional welcome beams and/or birthday pyrotechnics.

Welcome to HLP, and have a safe and productive day!

That really sucks. When I was 11 I had a computer in my room with unlimited DSL access.

When I was 11 I had a calculator with a red LED display. It took four AA batteries and had a square root button. Nearly 25 years later... I still don't have DSL. :P

When I was 11, we bought a ZX Spectrum which was the newest computer on the market. By 14 I was a Sysop on a dial-up bulletin board for Amstrad CPC's...

Don't worry, it'll get back on topic shortly, since everyone else was talking about what they were doing when they were 11, I thought I'd join in. It was probably started by your profile saying you are 11.

I'm 34, so actually remembering back when I was 11 was pretty hard work to be honest ;)

Re: Help a kid start modding... PLZ
Sorry, I just have to say this, it's really funny:

A few months ago, this kid Brendan, he is like:

"Hey guys, guess what I'm getting for my fifteenth birthday!! My very own PC!!!!!!"
And then, I'm all like "Umm, thats nice ...I've had mine since I was like 10 years old."

He got so pissed, but it was so very funny... You woulda had to be there. :p

Ok sorry, back on topic...

Re: Help a kid start modding... PLZ
*shrugs*

Your very own PC is not always a good thing. Mine this old junk heap that can't really do anything.
My father keeps it around because it can play old DOS games with ease, such as Descent (he loves Descent  :D). I usually use the family computer, because it is powerful enough to do most things I want it to.
