The most absolutely bizarre thing happened...
Many of you that have played Into the Depths of Hell chapter 3 recently know of that bug that causes the Slayers in the fourth mission to be replaced by Rockeyes, right? Well, I was trying to fix it, and one of my tests was to disable the "Scramble Mission" box in the Specs Editor. Thinking maybe you could manually select the Slayer torpedos. Well, I placed the slightly modified mission into Freespace2/data/missions, selected "Single Missions", and do you know what?

The mission wasn't there. In its place was an Untitled mission called "Ch2-9". I looked in my missions folder and that mission does not exist. So I played it.

It was a Scramble Mission with a blank briefing and debriefing. If you hit Commit, you'd be in a Ulysses with standard armament, and four support ships would be in front of you. Throughout the mission they'd simply fly lazy loop-the-loops over and over. After a few seconds, two Triton frieghters with (empty) cargoes would arrive, then a Zephyrus called the "Cree", and a GTWc Griffon called the "Protector".

Nothing else happens.

Interestingly the mission had a fully developed background (green nebulae), had music (Revelation soundtrack), and had briefing music (FS2 Bttl B03). This background and these musics are not present in the fourth mission.

Anyone have any idea what in the hell just happened?

Check Data\Missions as well as the corresponding folder for your mod. :)

Remember that FS2 will still check that folder when playing a mod.

Like I said, the mission doesn't exist. Not in the data/missions folder, not in the mod's data/missions folder, not anywhere.

My theory is that this developed because a campaign mission and a single mission were identical, so the data got corrupted or something. I'm just wondering how it managed to create such a complete "mission" as part of a glitch, because the mission certainly looks deliberately planned out. The support ships are obviously following a waypoint path.

And yet, the .fs2 file is nowhere to be found...

It must be a VP somewhere in your path. Run the debug build and take a look in the debug spew to see which VPs are being loaded.

Re: The most absolutely bizarre thing happened...
First, the mission you changed wouldn't appear in single missions since it's part of a campaign. Second, Ch2-9 would appear to be an incomplete and unused mission originally planned as part of and released with chapter 2. Don't forget that chapter 3 depends on chapter 2.

Re: The most absolutely bizarre thing happened...
Then how did ch2-9 find its way into my single missions folder? And why only when I try to put ch3-4 in there? Very odd...

Re: The most absolutely bizarre thing happened...
Single missions includes any mission not part of a campaign. It should have been there whenever the chapter 2 mod directory was used.
