Children of Men (and Pan's Labyrinth)
Seriosusly, go see this movie. No qualifiers, no half-measures - it flat out rocks. When they talk about "tense" and "moving" this is what they mean.

While you're at it, go see the other Best Movie of 2006, Pan's Labyrinth. Again, it's just a very, very good movie and I can't imagine anyone not liking it. Nothing else I've seen all year can hold a candle to these two.

edit: But you don't have to take my word for it. They are currently rated an unbelievable 94% and 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. If that's not a sure bet, you're a lousy gambler.

I know the gist of CoM, but what's the story behind Pan's Labyrinth?

Little girl travels with her pregant mother to mountain stronghold of Fascist general (her new "father") where he is busy hunting down Spanish rebels. Hijinks, both natural and supernatural, ensue.

Re: Children of Men (and Pan's Labyrinth)
Watching Children of Men reminded me of playing Call Of Duty.

I liked it - quite a lot infact - but it seemed a little too preachy for me. What with the only good guys being women and pussy-whipped hippies. And the gist of the story being that men will turn even the last hope of salvation for the species into some kind of icon of war was a bit too much for me to stomach.

Hippy though he may be, you can't not like Michael Caine in that movie (and Clive Owen is exactly what I imagine most of your British to be like: hunched, generally miserable, staring off into the middle distance.) Although I didn't come off as particularly anti-men to me, it's only the men who ever get anything done (Clive Owen, Jasper, Sid...supposedly the Human Project is men too) - the women are either cannon fodder or helpless victims.

And yeah, the whole internment scene was like Call of Duty meets Gaza, which considering the amount of games and movies I've been exposed to deserves kudos for being at all tense and engaging.

I just saw The Children of Men, and found it to be nothing short of a masterpiece. Best movie I've seen in a long time. (Although Blood Diamond is also superb.)

Yeah, we're having quite a good movie season at the moment.

I saw it again, in a theatre no less. One of the few that I think is worth my money, and more than once at that.

For all those wondering "Why the hell isn't this playing anywhere", it just got released to many, many more theatres, so check your newspaper. It had a  very limited initial release, but now it's widely available. So no excuses mofos.
