How come so many good looking campaigns have such nasty bugs?

IT'S A 3.6.9 BUG YOU IDIOT!
To consider the Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as to assert that in an entire field of millet, only one grain will grow. - Metrodorus of Chios
I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

I am calm, it's just so damn annoying that he will not take the proper explanation that it's a 3.6.9 red alert bug and not the campaign.

  • These words make the page load that much slower.
So, does this mean Homesick and the Procyon Insurgency will be compatible with 3.6.10, which I understand will be released soon?
Interestingly enough, this signature is none of the following:
A witty remark on whatever sad state of affairs the world may or may not be in
A series of localized forum in-jokes
A clever and self-referential comment on the nature of signatures themselves.

Hobo Queens are Crowned, but Hobo Kings are Found.

It's common knowledge that 3.6.10 is coming soon.

Then I must not be a common...

Anyway, sweet. :D

yeah, Back on topic, I also noticed that upon deleting the Red Alerts, some of the briefing stages on some missions become corrupt (because the animation pieces were never set).  Deleting the first stage of the briefing always fixed tihs for me, if anyone else is having this problem.
Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade
To write the love of God above, would drain the ocean dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky!

ya, on one of the missions the briefing crashes while loading the text
Fun while it lasted.

Then bitter.

PI at least will work fine with it, as it does right now. There are ways to get around the red alert issues even in 3.6.9.

I haven't played Homesick in a long time, but if ships are not showing up in a red alert mission, it's often because they departed in the previous mission. The game currently doesn't like that and just thinks they are dead when that happens. If you can stop them from leaving the mission, it works fine in many (but not all) cases.

well, I've experienced 4 Red Alert bugs in the past.  One crashes the game to windows, another spawns every ship, except you're off the map, all you can see is black and you can't target anything, but you can see ships moving on sensors and hear them fighting.  Another loads the mission like normal, except most ships have all subsystems and turrets destroyed.  The fourth was ships that don't show up.  And on some campaigns, I've found that it works just fine.

Yeah, time to violate that whole "Don't post in old threads" thingy....

I would like to 'think' this has already documented, but if not, here's your 'hack' for getting around crashes in "Homesick" due to red-alert issues with SCP 3.6.9 (and probably earlier builds).

Yes, replacing the Red Alert: 1 with Red Alert: 0 flags will do the trick but you have to do it a specific way or the VP will be rendered unreadable.  If you do it incorrectly, what will happen is you'll go to launch with the launcher, get an hourglass, and then...nothing.

So.

1.  You absolutely want a hex editor for this.  I'm partial to WinVI32, myself.  Google it.
2.  Open the "Homesick.vp" file with the program.  Switch to Hex mode.
3.  Go to "Search" and search for the following hex string: 52 65 64 20 41 6c 65 72 74 3a 20 31
4.  Replace all instances with 52 65 64 20 41 6c 65 72 74 3a 20 30
5.  Save your changes.
6.  Launch away!

No more red alerts, which degrades the game experience a bit IMHO.  Instead of red alerts you'll drop to an actual briefing.

At least you can continue.

Alternately, you can install the full retail version of Fs2 and play it totally vanilla.

If this solution has already been thoroughly documented elsewhere, my apologies.
