Re: Question re: Derelict's story
Wow...

I mean Wow...   :eek2:

I never thought that Derelict would have this kind of longevity. I've not played Freespace 2 in years and just on a random search I discover an entire community that still plays it. Not only that, but someone picked up the torch and actually gave voice to Derelict!

Wow...

I'm seriously impressed. I'm going to have to go out and buy a joystick and see if I can't get playing Freespace 2 again... plus get a chance to hear the voices in Derelict for myself!

(Yes... I am one of the original Derelict authors)  :D

Uh... hi.

Derelict was one of the first campaigns I played when I finally got FS2 (after I got around the installer). Suffice to say, it was a huge inspiration for me in my modding career, particularly for the concept of characters and non-traditional mission design. Sprucing it up was the least I could do for such an influential and important campaign.

Just hope you don't disagree too much with some of the design concessions I made...  :nervous:

Re: Question re: Derelict's story
do i hear this right? the campaign king had a guru? no blaise, i'm not mocking you. But i totally agree, Derelict was the first fan campaign i played, and it is probably the reason i kept on playing. Agatheron, you probably already know this, but Derelict was a masterpiece, and to be the insipration behind Blaise Russel, the campaign king himself, it is truly an honour. I am not worthy to be in the same topic as either of you. i get the feeling that this didn't come out how i meant it to...

Don't be stupid, you're not a campaign king, and you probably never will be. :P

Welcome back Agatheron! If you're here to stay, that is. :)

Well, that depends... did you intend to gush like a schoolgirl? :P

I'm relatively new to the FS2 community, but I must say Derelict was a fantastic piece of work.  My favorite mission by far was Rites of Passage.

Re: Question re: Derelict's story
The Number of the Beast is definitely my favorite out of Derelict. It's rare to have chaos so rapidly and completely descend in a mission.

Wait, which one was that?

Since I've not seen them yet, I have nothing to complain about ;) But from the response around here, sounds like you did a fine job. I still have to re-acquire a joystick if I'm going to give FS2 SCP a serious go... So I'll be able to hear and see everything you did on the update. I'm honoured that someone else picked up the torch.

I also don't intend to steal any titles... so Campaign King is safe by me. Ancient Guru seems to be the label they've tacked on me. It should probably be "Rusted SEXP" or something like that. :P

I was curious as to what people's favorite missions were, because I think my personal favorites were ones that either others didn't like or that were completely under the radar. I can't remember the title of it, but the mission that had the energy-sucking mines mixed in with explosive ones... mostly because of what I needed to do to get the SEXPs to simulate 2 different types of mines at the same time... My other favorite was the strike mission... Killer Rabbit, I think I called it. Short... lots of explosions... and a real test of one's speed and accuracy...

I mean, of course I liked Rites of Passage too... it got me a free T-shirt for the effort. I still have it too :)

Anyway, I'm curious to hear other's feedback...

Oh... and nothing currently in the works, considering I only just stumbled in on HLP a few days ago... I'll have to give it some thought.

Re: Question re: Derelict's story
IIRC, Derelict was the second mod I got, first being the FSPort.

I really liked the riot mission, yeah. It was great to have the Nero get blasted by a Lucy that was... Sort of... On your side. I also liked the dream one and the mission where there's the boarding party on the Nyanya who find the Shivans. Wayfarer was interesting as well...

The one mission I didn't like was the one with the Gorgon Cannon... I dunno, I just didn't like it for some strange reason, despite being cool.

Re: Question re: Derelict's story
I've got three personal Derelict favorite missions:
1.  Momento Mori (the second-last mission with the Cthon and the huge fleet; talking about going "over the top")--Liked it just because it was a huge battle without BoE syndrome, and it was enjoyable.
2.  Can't remember the name, but the mission where you come close to capturing the Auriga
3.  Sheridan's Gambit--the Gorgon Cannon mission.  Bear in mind, I was fourteen or something when I first played it, and I had never even imagined how FRED worked, so seeing this gas miner fire four BFGreens at a Ravana was just amazing.

Of course, this is only the best of the best.  I really liked the missions when you first start hunting the Shivans (guarding the Vasudan corvette and the Valhalla group --> Iron Curtain), simply because they seemed so dark and evil. :)

Oh, and it's good to have you back, Agatheron.  I thought we were going into a steady decline too. :)
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

I'm a bit of an amateur writer (won a few minor awards here and there when I wrote seriously) and I've been working on coming up with a campaign.  But I have no FREDing skill.  I'd love some assistance.  For that matter, I'd love for someone to take on the project and just let me write :D

I'm not forgetting, I'm recruiting! =)

Just like I'm not forgetting the pile of work I'll need to do on Steadfast when May arrives =)

Ah, you're recruiting.

Anyway, I'm worried for you. Steadfast is without a doubt the most chatty campaign ever.

Re: Question re: Derelict's story
Uh the real problem is make them work. send-message-list can support max 30 messages, and I had to put another list of messages one time. Another time, I used 60 chained events, each with send-message. Assigning messages is a nightmare, believe me.

<you will have things to do when all these messages are sent, so don't worry!>
