Hmmm.... Looks like I'm about a week late on this one, but there's one comment I just have to respond to....
there was a campaign i played a while back, i dont remember which one, that had a really long mission where you had to collapse 2 or 3 nodes that were something like 20k apart
30,238.1 meters between the convoy's point of arrival and the more distant of the target nodes. I don't recall the section of the FRED2 documentation that said I had to be
nice.
Incidentally, and more to the point of the topic, I've gotten in the habit of viewing all major FS2 projects as vaporware until they're actually released. There's just no point in getting excited about a project that just got underway and won't be done until I've entered a completely different phase of life, if it doesn't get canceled in the intervening eight years. Granted, some major projects have been completed or at least made some major releases, but most of those were projects I either wasn't terribly interested in or became very jaded about after about the third year of hearing, "No, seriously! We're almost done!"
Basically, I've learned that as custom content for FS2 goes, the old proverb should be altered to say, "If you want it done
right at all, you've got to do it yourself."
On that note, summer is coming up, and I'm playing FreeSpace 2, so I might just put myself back in the FRED'ing saddle this year to see what I can turn out. If nothing else, I could always release the mission I made for the FRED contest some two-and-a-half (it was '05, right?) years ago....
