Has anyone ever thought about how the Terran and Vasudan armies are like or if they even have them? FS does mention a few times ground forces but only marines as far as I know and IMO the 14 year war and NTF rebellion cant have been fought just on space.

There's a multi mission in which some planet in Sirius or Polaris (one of those) is fought over with ground troops.

How exactly is fought over with them?

Dunno.

The players (4 of them) are in space and single-handedly destroy marine transports, loads of cruisers and corvettes and two destroyers. Hardly believable if you ask me, but hey. That's balance for you.

On a somewhat related thing, I remember that a looong time ago someone made a map for UT that was based on the Orion, does anyone remember it too?

You don't actually see the battle. It's just part of the backstory. You are supposed to prevent additional forces from reaching the planet (i.e. jumping out in its general direction).

It's actually even worse, as it is typically one player that does all the damage to the incoming ships. Although I think the idea with the respawns is that they are supposed to be multiple waves of a wing.

But 40 fighters shouldn't be able to destroy two destroyers WITH THEIR FIGHTER ESCORT!!

You're sure? As long as they have A1 its just fine. :D Anyway, I think that if the space battles of the 14 year war were already quite destructive, the ground battles must've been an onslaught.

It's multiplayer, so there are four Alpha 1s (times nine or so for the respawns, so 36 Alpha 1s )

I'm saying in-universe. Those 4 fighters are just normal pilots, not Alpha 1s.

And don't forget , ground battles are only fought if the space battles allow for the troops to get there in the first place  :)

Well anyway....I don't ever think that the Shivans were interested in planetary control, but there were probably lots of ground battles during the TVW.  I seem to remember something about 600,000 ground troops from the 1st mission in fs2.

The Shivans have allegedly never landed on a planet. However, just because they haven't doesn't mean they will.MT

Considering that, at least according to the Tech Room data, the Shivans appear to have evolved/been designed in a zero-gravity environment, they might not do so well on a planetary surface. :p

Well Shivans are quite diverse as a species so they may have some 'branch' type or some technology that is able of planetary combat on ground. But if I were the Shivans I'd just nuke the poor planet. :P

I opened a similar thread almost a year ago: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42478.0.html

I'll briefly explain what came out in my thread: apart from 2 posts actually talking how FS ground combat might have been, most of the thread is based on the "Could Shivans land on planets?" and " :wtf: is the Hades doing on Deneb in the FS2 opening cutscene?" questions.

Aaahhhhhh.... HLP. :p

Okay, so let's all leave the "Could Shivans land on planets?" and " :wtf: is the Hades doing on Deneb in the FS2 opening cutscene?" questions out of this thread, please.

This may sound crazy but after the 1st Great War, maybe the GTVA could've come up with shields for their armored forces much in the same way of the fighters shields, it would be rather easy IMO, just make an adpation for the technology to work in the planet but in this case the gravity could be a problem.

But we don't know how the shields react to something constantly interfering them. For all we know FS shields might not function at all when ground breaks the shield (bubble).

I'll give a cookie to the one who comes up with canon evidence to counter the above statement. ;)

IIRC, collisions simply go through the shield, without depleting it.
