I don't agree for evangelion. Sure, they make overuse of some cells, but I like the script ( ok, I admit I'm the only one I know who liked the end, but hey, I'm a twisted mind). And rah, they aren't robots damnit! sorry, I had to say it.
For anime being mostly crap, from my own experience, it's wrong, but I guess that in reality you're right. japanes makes so many different series, OVA etc, that there must be a lot of things to trash. Anyway, down here ( in France), we get to see mostly the most popular ones ( Tho it's not always true, things like Harlock aren't world wide known, and Goldorak or the Mysterious Cities of gold aren't even well known in Japan). So i guess french have an idealized vision of animes, that may not be true ( and it's also true for other countries I guess). Anyway, as we don't have the crap down here, I won't complain, and yeppe, in France, whatever you can say, we have almost only great animes, so animes does rule

The US gets rather heavily filtered doses of anime as well. Only the best of the mostly bad crop makes it over here. That doesn't mean that anime rules, it means that good anime rules and that most of it is still crap.

Now, I've never heard of Goldorak, but I can say that Mysterious Cities of Gold are absolutely awesome. Better, by far than most of the anime that came out of japan during the same era.

I'm afraid I must now invoke Sturgeon's Law:

You're right though...
and I can't say I'm a big fan of anime. I've only heard of the few wildly popular ones here in the states

Incorrect. Theodore Sturgeon actually said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud."

Unfortunately, in my experience, the amount of art out there in the me-too world of anime approaches 0% 99.9% of it is crap. I form this opinion from careful and systematic study of japanese television over a period of several years. Other countries get the best of the bad lot. Sometimes, the worst stuff (like evangelion, which merchandized well) escapes too.

Well yes most anime is crap (example: pokemon  ) but opinions differ so... (notice that some like evangelion but some don't)

But Love Hina is quite entertaining, I won't say it's perfect but I enjoyed it

Yes, I know that. Irrelevant. Despite its off-the-cuff origin, "Sturgeon's Law" exists now as I originally stated it.

Bah. Bad form to quote the misquotation.

I didn't though. I quoted Sturgeon's Law, which is based on, but not identical to, an actual Sturgeon quote.
