I was actually surprised that Top Gear liked it as much as they did.  Sarcastic and witty comments aside they really did like it overall (except for the dinging) ...but these guys are paid to not like every car unless it completely blows them away.  I'd say that is high praise enough.  But generally speaking reviews do seem to be quite positive on the CTS...I was impressed.

But my price range is down in the Honda Civic, Mazda3, etc. territory.  Probably end up with a Civic...its a Canadian thing to do

yeah and if it's an american car, they VERY rarely have anything good to say.

about the dinging.... by the way.... i've owned the CTS-V for 6 months now, and i've driven it ~12,000 miles.  In all that time, i think there was probably only one time where it "dinged"... and that was when i opened the car door, and unbuckled myself, with the key still in the ignition.  i'm GLAD it dinged, because i was going to close the door with the keys in the car.

...not to mention you can turn the dinging off VERY easily

actually, IceFire, i'd take the Civic over the Mazda3 in a heartbeat.  i'm not the biggest fan of the mazda3, but civics are still awesome

Seem to be leaning that way.  I still think the Mazda3 has better styling and possibly more sporty handling versus the top fuel economy, safety, and still a reasonably powered engine.

Well I tried to pull the trigger on a Civic but I ran into an unforseen problem with the vehicle.  I don't fit properly.  Legs are too long and my arms are too short to make the steering wheel/pedals/seat work together properly without my knee being at a strange angle.  Ended the longer test drive with a nasty leg cramp...so...despite it being a good combination of things I think its out.  So looking at the Mazda3 and maybe the Subaru Impreza and the Saturn Astra...(same car as the Opel/Vauxhall for the Europeans out there).

vyper: That'd be the European Civic hatchback.  They don't sell those here.

Wow... just... wow. I just looked at the Canadian Honda website. That's one ugly ****ing car.

The Astra is a reasonably priced car, just don't expect it to feel very upmarket.
