But a mere popup blocker only works so far. You need to restrict scripts as well, in order to annihilate virtually all popups. And IE is 'popular' mostly because it's heavily integrated into WinD'ohses (which are unfortunately also 'popular') and the Average-Joe doesn't understand computers enough to think about alternative browsers. Alternative browsers that are actually safe, contain some really useful features 3-5 years before they appear in IE, and that follow certain standards and have a much better chance of showing sites properly.

Edit: And we were actually discussing ads (advertisements), not just popups. IE can't do squat to ads. You know, those flashy, noisy doodles that run around the screen telling that either your computer is infected but clicking the ad will cure it, or that you've just won 7 Lamborghinis/some other crap.

Yup. I see it everytime I'm checking in on HLP from the university. We probably should be clicking it so that HLP can get some provision or something.

what is the point in me saying there is a COMPATABILITY ISSUE, if everyone else thinks feck-you, you use IE 7. in the future i wont post anything in the site SUPPORT section, to be honest i realy don't care now, i have more important things to do than way up the pro's and cons of diffrent browsers, only to get Flamed for my choice. This site is suppost to be a HUB for freespace fans, not for Opera users only, and the disscusion on how to block adverts.

haloboy100, hlp probably get money for those ads, they deffently wont be there for show.

Now now. No flaming here whatsoever. I'm merely curious as to why are you using IE. When someone asks "Why do you still use IE instead of a better browser?", it's almost like asking "Why are you still driving a Ford Quadricycle? There are newer and better vehicles, you know.". And besides, I wasn't promoting Opera, even if it's a good browser. I'm a Firefox dude and I'm recommending that. And I'm not even getting paid to do it.

This discussion sprung to life, when you said that the HLP front page wasn't working and we found out the cause for it: IE. We recommended a solution: use another browser. Then we discussed about the cons of IE and the pros of everything else to further support the fact that you should use another broswer.

The ads might be a source of income but in most cases they're just annoying. Some of the sites I frequently visit can't be viewed reasonably with IE, because they're so loaded with ads that the 'puter clogs up and it also takes an awful lot of time to load the pages when the ads must also be loaded. Then you have those Flash thingies that persistently stay in the middle of the screen, preferrably preventing you from, for example, reading something interesting.

Edit: Oh, and while I'm remembering this. The reason for this compatibility issue is that Mircrosoft wants to do things their way, instead of actually taking others into concideration. Most browsers render pages following certain generally approved rules. IE does something waay different, because Microsoft isn't interested.

Lobo makes a valid point. I see no flaming here.

And besides, it's not like anybody is forcing you to opgrade to a hybrid car or anything; Firefox is totally free and it's a 1 minute download and another minute install. Plus you keep all your IE bookmarks and home pages.

Hmm. No one/nothing is perfect, except Allah. It seems that the current beta version of Firefox can't show the drop menus perfectly either. Damnation.
