I was hoping someone could help me
Hello All,

I've recently switched over to ubuntu (gutsy) and I'm trying to install freespace.  I've got the game data from the installer and I've installed openal, but the game does not start.  I double click the linux executable and nothing happens, and when I run it from a terminal, the terminal opens for a split second and then closes.  I'm sure I'm probably forgetting to do something and I was hoping that someone with more experience dealing with freespace in linux could help me out.  Thanks.

Post system specs please.

Also try opening a terminal and running Freespace from there (it shouldn't close if the program quits)

:welcome:
For future reference, there's a specific board for asking for help. No problem this time as your new.

I don't know much about Linux, but people really do need you specs in order to help.

Sorry about posting in the wrong forum!

I've got a ATI Radeon graphics card, 4GB processor, and 1GB memory.  I had windows on this machine previously and freespace worked fine, so I assume its something to do with the operating system.  Also, when I try to run the linux executable, it generates a text file in the freespace directory, but it's blank and the its name is just a bunch of symbols--maybe someone's had this problem before?

Re: I was hoping someone could help me
1. Make sure you installed the correct version of the executable. That is, the 32bit or 64bit binary, depending on your OS
2. Check that direct rendering is working, by giving the following command in a shell window: glxinfo

If no. 2 doesn't work, install the package mesa-utils first.

Re: I was hoping someone could help me
I checked and it says that it's not on, so how would I enable it?

It's rather difficult, or it was for me. If you fix the problem now it may reappear if you update seemingly unrelated packages.

go to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI for help

if nothing there works try The wiki specifically dealing with ati driver issues

Best of luck to you

I think you may have some things confused. First of all, you can't have a 4 GB processor, or 4 Ghz (talking about stock) for that matter.

Run this program, and this, and take screenshots and give it to us. (if you don't know how to take a screenshot, ask)

Re: I was hoping someone could help me
CPU-zis a Windows utility and thus does not run natively on Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution.

Try $ less /proc/cpuinfo. ($ less /proc/meminfo for memory information)

Also, some CPU's have a bit confusing uptake on the naming schemes and actual clock power, good example being AMD's processors that are marked 4000+ or something like that, even if the actual clock(s) are something like 2.2 or 2.5 GHz. Seeing how this performance-comparision number does not really say what units it means (it's assumed that everyone knows the processors performance is comparative to a traditional CPU with clock frequency of the number in megahertz), it's understandable that some people make mistakes (or even typoes) with what the markings and units mean and what they are.

I'm guessing the processor in case is either AMD Athlon64 4000+ or Athlon64 X2 4000+... could be wrong though.
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

He's running Linux.

CPUID is a (very useful) WINDOWS program

I already know what his problem is and gave him the best resources (I know of) to fix it

There's no reason to chastize him over this since it doesn't matter what CPU he has, because this is a GPU related problem, if he has questions about the howtos I gave him it's up to him to find answers here or somewhere else

Re: I was hoping someone could help me
I know that CPU-Z is a windows program, maybe it will work under Wine. At any rate, I linked to GPU-Z. (the main reason I put up CPU-Z is because of the 4 GB CPU he has)
