They're doing what the UK did with Cannabis reclassification and sneaking it in behind the Afghanistan stuff.

The thing is that as soon as it comes into effect, the providers will simply switch to a new mailing system which uses loop-holes in the bill. Oh and can anyone say Hotmail? They'd be screwed.

The good thing to come out of this would be that companies could no longer afford to send out spam mail en masse.

Trust me, within an hour of the bill becoming law there will be mail programs freely available that work like Kazaa and bounce files between peers without the need for a central server. And failing that, you can just use a perl parsing script to send mail via webpage.

That's not only dumb, it's impractical. How the hell will you bill people for e-mail? Bill the ISPs? Yeah, that might work, but every single mail server that's not directly linked to an ISP will still be operating for free. Hell, I'll personally put a mail server up for free if that happens (though I'm not on the US, so I wouldn't be affected by that).

You can't force anything on the Internet. If people want to use something for free, they WILL. If people want to copy or distribute stuff, they WILL. If people want to talk without being noticed or recognized, they WILL. If people want to scream something to the whole world to know, they WILL. That's the beauty of the net, it's the first truly democratic system (well, maybe anarchist, but...) in the world. It's the first place you can express your opinions without being monitored or censored (if you want). All these stupid new laws, including the DMCA, will never put a dent in it - because the 'net is made by it's users, and the users don't want it.

Stupid congress people.

Well put.:) There is really no way they can enforce this kind of thing, so it would not really affect anyone even if it did go into effect. (which I doubt in the first place)

Yeah, it's ridiculous. But given the latest developments with all the lobbying by record and movie industries in the congress, I wouldn't be surprised if the US congress actually tried something like that.

I would really really be happy if you were right about this ZylonBane. Well it might be a hoax but at least we can do is to keep hoping that it won't come true. Hey but look at this way.. If I wouldn't have e-mail I wouldn't be able to keep in touch with my staff for the DE campaign. It would really suck if this law is established.

and BTW, the USA government can't do anything about my account because I have my account at my countryes web-site :p  :p I just want to say that I am sorry for those who live in US.

Hey, the ;7 smiley is back. Right on!!! :D ;)

There is no way to regulate this. Unless they can controll at least 6 billion e-mail accounts at the time. And you know what, THEY CAN'T!!! MWHAHAHAHAHA ;7 ;) ;) :D

This will kill Windows as everyone will just set-up RedHat and use sendmail. Mail servers will end up like crappy-ass porn sites, you take down one illegal server and ten more spring up in its place.

Even if the bill is counter-acted somehow people will know that possibility exists for it to be done again and someone will come up with a way to use your geocities webspace as a mail-box.

The internet is about freedom of all information and was designed way back in the 50's to ensure that should one computer or part go down, the rest would remain intact and ready to rebuild. Within hours of some retard screwing with any program or system to stop people using or copying it, 10,000 crackers/hackers will be blasting at the code looking for ways to undo the new restrictions. With the amount of system and program diversity as well as the innovations of programmers the internet has become impossible to control or take down (excluding mass thermo-nuclear detonation in the upper atmosphere). If the internet ever goes down or cannot overcome a challenge, it will most likely be the end of the modern world.
