Re: "unable to get proper pixel format in OpenGL Win32"
Ok, I tried the chipset drivers; I'm sure they are the right ones, but the result? Windows hangs without an error message, seconds after booting up. I'm with you now after using Safe mode and a restore point.

Ack, I was worried about that - I've always had that sort of bad luck with VIA's notorious chipset drivers, and this is a key reason why I switched to nForce-driven chipsets instead.

Since you were unable to disable the onboard video card through the BIOS settings, you might indeed want to check Device Manager and see if it can be disabled through there. That's providing it shows up, of course - some motherboard are set to automatically disable the onboard video card if they detect an add-in card is in use, so this might not even be your issue. It's definitely worth a look though.

Re: "unable to get proper pixel format in OpenGL Win32"
I've run several VIA boards, never bluescreened them after a driver upgrade.  You should be able to get an old version and revert them manually in safe mode without having to use windows recovery.

Re: "unable to get proper pixel format in OpenGL Win32"
Phew, problem solved! ATI released new drivers for my graphics card and apparently all is well now. I know they implemented some OpenGL fixes, so one of them must have been whatever was causing my problem. Strange that its taken this long for them to implement OGL properly. Oh well!

Thanks all :-D

Re: "unable to get proper pixel format in OpenGL Win32"
I've been having this same problem. "unable to get proper pixel format in OpenGL Win32," followed by unable to intialize display device. I tried to set OpenGL to 32bit in the video options like it was suggested. I just upgraded from XP to Windows 7, 64 bit version. I've got the default video drivers, and am not sure if that is the problem or the OS is. This OS is new to me, so I don't really know how to fiddle with the settings yet. Can anyone please help? FS2 Open 3.10 worked perfectly on XP before, I'm just not sure what to do.

Your fs2_open.log: (possibly the most important thing ever)
    • fs2_open.log is a file generated by debug builds. It contains all sorts of useful information that we need in order to help you. That is why you should follow the instructions below and provide us with that file when asking for help. Creating an fs2_open.log happens like this:
      • Download the recommended build (link is in the first post of this thread) if you haven't already and place the .exe files to your \freespace2\ folder.
      • Switch to windowed mode (open the Launcher, open the Features tab, select Dev Tools from the pulldown menu and tick on "Run in window").
      • Select the debug build (fs2_open_3_6_10_debug.exe) and run it. If you've been experiencing crashes, do exactly what you've done previously, up until it crashes.

If you have had other issues, it is sufficient to run it until you get to the Main Hall. If the debug build crashes fatally even before getting to the Main Hall, no worries.
      • Quit the game.
      • Find fs2_open.log from \freespace2\data\, copy it to a safe location and include it to your post, either as an attachment (click Additional Options when posting) or using the "code" tags.
    • Your improved fs2_open.log:
Your improved fs2_open.log is not needed by default, but if some helpful HLP member asks you to provide one, here's how you create them:
      • Download this file and place it to your \freespace2\data\ folder. Then, do exactly what what you did when creating the first fs2_open.log. Note that this log is quite a bit larger than the previous one, so you'll probably have to either compress it into a zip/rar/etc before attaching it to your post. Alternatively you can use pastebin.org.

Re: "unable to get proper pixel format in OpenGL Win32"
Sorry, sorry.  It's just that I'm far from a computer ace. I can follow directions, and that's about it.  :(

On the plus side, apparently it's a driver problem:

"Error: Current Gl Version of 1.1 is less than the required version of 1.2. Switch video modes or update your drivers. File: gropengl.cpp Line: 2980."

Does that help? I'm also running my GT 9600 off of the 185.93 driver.

Is there a particular reason as to why you have not posted the log?

Sorry, I thought that might be the problem. Is this it? If not, I don't really know where this 'clipboard' information is stored the debugger mentioned. I do appretiate the help, but bear in mind this stuff is greek to me.

Hmmm. Okay, my first suspicion is that your drivers are broken. I would recommend a full reinstall of those.
You should also use the Launcher's video tab to set the resolution to something other than 640x480, and the colour depth to 32 bits.

    Thanks, I'll try that.

Re: "unable to get proper pixel format in OpenGL Win32"
Yup, the 186.93 drivers fixed it. Every thing is A-OK now. Thanks again E. Strange, I didn't think there was that big of a difference between 185 and 6, but evidently there was.

Maybe the previous install just didn't work right somehow and this fixed it.  Who knows, glad it's working for you now though.

Also, protip: OpenAL != OpenGL. Not saying that you should find an OpenGL and install it, but just that OpenAL won't affect any graphics-related issues in any way.

Re: "unable to get proper pixel format in OpenGL Win32"
I installed my ati HD 3850 card with the 9-4_agp-hotfix_xp32_dd_ccc  this is the only way to use this card the version 10 drivers will not install that said everything now works. I did notice in mission that the
game would slightly freeze  hmm  I turned off the music and that is now gone it seems. I turned off the music in the retail game I play better without it I am just odd :)

I am impressed nice upgrades guys good job on great game nice eye candy the ships look fantastic

once thing on the retail I could rotate using the right joystick but with FSO it does nothing? [ not sure what this is called in the ship settings] is it not a option or am i missing something?

I will test this out by enabling the music again see if this happens again just to see if the music files are doing this above, if i occurs again do I report something like this to a debug forum?
