Re: Question about the GTD Orion turrets
Actually, you just have to retool the powerplant, and add the components for channeling power to the beam cannon. Not as much space as ammunition requires. Plus, no risk of the ammo blowing up in your face.

I'd take a battery of Phoenix Vs before I took Fusion Mortars or SGreens.

And reactors can explode and heatsinks can... get very hot.  :p

quick question (don't have FS2 right here). Do the blobs more damage in FS2?

i think so. In FS1, blobs are more of a distraction than anything else. that's why a fenris (which has fusion mortars) can destroy an orion, if the destroyer doesn't have fighters.
Sig nuked! New one coming soon!

Re: Question about the GTD Orion turrets
Blobs, a distraction? Go fight a cruiser or destroyer with no shields, on some mode other than Easy or Very Easy. They are deadly to fighters. The issue is not how useful blobs were, the issue is how useful the alternative to blobs was:

Quote from: Some Wingman in 'The Great Hunt' (probably misquoted)
No shields, no beams, no flak guns... It's a miracle we won the great war.

Until one faction had shields, the others didn't need them. The Shivans' shields were an advantage against the GTA and PVN in the Great War, but who are the Terrans' and Vasudans' shields an advantage against in the second Shivan incursion? Nobody. There aren't any factions in FS2 that lack any of these technologies.

They were good enough against fighters, and as long as the enemy warships weren't good against your warships, your warships didn't have to be good against theirs.

Blobs are dangerous if you've got a hole or no shields.

Even when you do have no shields, they're pretty easy to dodge. But if you happen to make a mistake, they can do a number on your hull.

Re: Question about the GTD Orion turrets
Yeah, arguably the best thing about the Orion is that it's basically a big block.

Which makes hiding and sniping it hard. I remember taking down the Eva, you just needed to find a corner, and start bombing away. Then you could drag the support ship in there, and have it smash into the wall until it detonated. Which brings to mind.. If it has hundreds of bombs/missiles, shouldn't it, like, destroy everything in a 10-km radius?
You get one chocolate chip.
