im confused isnt xfire just an ingame text based(in a non vocal way) chat application , and if so why do we need it as we already have this ?
It is an ingame IM (=Instant Messenger, examples are MSN, ICQ, AIM, YIM....), with several other functions and features:
* Voice chat*
* Ingame chat for many games (you press a key combination to activate the ingame window) -> no switching to desktop everytime you want to read a message *
* You can add gameservers to your favorites; you can join them by a double-click - You can also visit a server on which a friend is playing by right-click at him and select "Join game" *
* You can see what your friends and friends of friends are playing *
* You can view gamestats from your or other user's profile (kills/deaths, k/d ratio, hours spent on gaming on which game...) *
* Chat rooms *
* Game lobbies ( http://www.xfire.com/cms/xf_manual_lobbies/ ) *
* automatic patch downloads*
* server browser *
* miniprofile *
* you can abo channels from which you want to get the files (for instance, RTS game demos) regulary *
* automatic screenshot and video uploading *

Hint: You can disable the most features if you don't like them (for example, auto-downloads, friends of friends-list, your public profile etc...).

@andicirk:
Haven't really tried the voice client, but consider that xfire is made for gamers. I am very sure that it won't eat up your bandwith. ;)

I also created a group chat channel "freespace2"
