I think that was the theory. Obviously, it doesn't matter that much in practice. :)

Well i imagine that it would be sort of redundant to see enemies 10k away while you're dogfighting with things that are within 2k. its just more efficient to see the ships that are more relevant to you right now.

Usually it doesn't matter but in nebula missions but generally speaking, it is good to set the range to 2k to ensure that you know exactly and how many enemies around. Although not as useful as in easy to medium, it is highly useful in hard or insane.
