Re: 3.6.10 Release Candidate 3 (RC3) Now Available!
Would it be possible to add these two entries into code\mission\missionbriefcommon.cpp:

Code: [Select]
case 'w':
return BRIEF_TEXT_WHITE;

case 'y':
return BRIEF_TEXT_YELLOW;

The colors in question are already #define'd, they just are not allocated and it would open up some nice enhancements to the mission briefs. Enhancements that I'd really like to see make it in to the final MediaVP's.

I realize we're closed for feature requests and it really is not a bug per-se that they are not associated, but it is not introducing any drastically new elements that I can conceive as breaking anything.

I should note: I have also compiled in a build and it works exactly as expected.

Re: 3.6.10 Release Candidate 3 (RC3) Now Available!
{color=red]EXTREMELY IMPORTANT NOTE:[/color] Because of a bug, fs_open versions till 3.6.9. (included) apply tbms in direct priority order, from the highest priority to the lowest one. In this way, the lowest priority entries override the rest. As example, this issue makes impossible overriding mediavps tbm settings from any tbm inside a main mod which uses this art enhancement as a secondary mod. The only way you have is overriding the whole table as explained below.

Is this still an issue we need to be concerned with, or does the section above the NOTE apply?
This was a bug I discovered quite long time ago and Taylor (IIRC) fixed it, but 3.6.9. is fully affected. Newest (and not so new) builds work perfectly fine. There should be and old thread about it.

You can make a very simple test with two tbms (example aaa-shp.tbm and bbb-shp.tbm, but use them from different folders/vps) which change any ship model you want (aaa-shp.tbm: Uly into Herc, bbb-shp.tbm: Uly into Herc2). Go to F3 lab and look how your Uly looks.

I've also updated that wiki page saying that this is a solved bug in order to avoid misunderstandings.

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES WITH FS2:
  • Please, please, please, READ and UNDERSTAND the sticky threads in FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support board.
A lot of people are willing to help you, but, as anyone can understand, seeing the very same "issues" repeated again and again can become quite depressing. Please, spend a bit of time trying to solve the issue by yourself.
    (Lobo deserves a monument).
  • Then, if you aren't still able to solve your issue, feel free to ask for help in that same board.
FYI, most of the troubles are caused by wrong mod installations which lead to either missing data or undesired cross-effects between them. Always follow the mod installation instructions and keep a clean FS2 installation as explained in the sticky threads. Two additional links about how the game handles game data:
  • If you think that you've discovered a bug, mantis it.
Provide as much info as you can, and try to narrow it down. A lonely "FS2 doesn't work" is not a good report.

Had the first standalone crash from RC3 that I can't explain or didn't involve a null vec3d.  Retail data on the standalone.  It appears to have gone crazy as soon as it loaded a Lilith model and then proceed to get progressively worse until it finally crashed a few missions later.

Re: 3.6.10 Release Candidate 3 (RC3) Now Available!
I have noticed that the briefing icon positions are no longer scaling for the 1024x768 interface, like they used to. The game now uses the 640x480 positions regardless of the resolution, which can look funny since the icons only take up a small portion of the briefing window. I wanted to make sure this wasn't intentional before I post it on Mantis.

Re: 3.6.10 Release Candidate 3 (RC3) Now Available!
with the recent changes within the 3.6.11 nightly builds that have speeded up how the game reacts .... faster load times and faster fps ... is there anyway that this can be incorporated into the release of RC3 as a lot of problems are being caused by slow load up in multi ....

or will we have to wait until 3.6.11 ?

personally i would prefer to see RC3 being held back a little longer to get this done instead of waiting another few months for 3.6.11 being released to fix these problems...

There have been 165 commits to trunk since RC3 was branched off. I'm not sure that's feasible!  :D

Re: 3.6.10 Release Candidate 3 (RC3) Now Available!
When I clicked on one of the icons of a ship in the mission briefing using the 3.6.10 RC3 build, I got this error:

fs2_open_3_6_10_RC3 caused an Access Violation in module atioglxx.dll at 001b:692dd990.
Exception handler called in FreeSpace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 7/18/2009 11:15:22.
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\fs2_open_3_6_10_RC3.exe, run by Jason.
1 processor(s), type 586.
2047 MBytes physical memory.
Read from location 0bd11014 caused an access violation.

When I run regular 3.6.10, I hardly ever get errors, but when I tried any of the RC builds of 3.6.10, either RC1, RC2, or RC3, the game crashes all the time and is very unstable.  Why is this?

First, you should make sure your gfx card driver is up-to-date.
Second, could you run a debug build and post the log here?
Third, do those crashes still happen if you disable GLSL (in the Launcher, under Troubleshoot)?
Fourth, is there a rogue atioglxx.dll in your FreeSpace folder?

What is your definition for "regular"? If anything, the RC's are the most regular 3.6.10 builds. Especially RC3.

If E's advises produce no results, go to the troubleshooting FAQ (link in my signature), scroll down to Graphical issues, take a look at the third problem and act according to the instructions.

First, I don't know how to update my gfx card.

Third. I'm not seeing Disable GLSL under my troubleshoot options.
Fourth.  If there were a rogue file, I have no idea where it would be.
Fifth.  After reviewing my FS2 error log file, it seems that every crash I have ever had has something to do with that atioglxx.dll file.

Re: 3.6.10 Release Candidate 3 (RC3) Now Available!
Sorry, wrong log. There is a file called fs2_open.log in your data folder, post that here.

As for your graphics card, make sure that the driver is the most recent version available for your card. Go to http://ati.amd.com to check.

What folder would that be in in the data directory?  I'm looking in the data directory, and all I see are a lot of other folders and a text file named fs2_open.  Here is what it says:

No no!  I love the mod!  That's just what Commander Ivanova says at the beginning of B5 season 3.

Those files should be moved out of your FreeSpace directory, and into separate mod directories.

As for the crashes, go to the FS2Open FAQ (link is in JeffVader's sig), and find the post about the alternative atioglxx.dll files, and see if those solve the problem.

To tell you the truth, I have never upgraded my graphics card driver since I have had this computer.  I am downloading ATI's most recent update now.

It's oft been recommended not to install FS2 into a path with spaces in the filename too.  You might want to try C:\Games\FreeSpace2 instead.  And yes those random vps need to come out.
