Freespace open 3.6.9 and Fred2 open3.6.9. from GOG, Windows XP Pro, processer/ 2 gig and Radeon 9600 VC

Okay,  so noob, I can't even get started.  To start out, I figured out that .fd2 files are supposed to be stored in \data\missions.

Starting out, even before launch, I get an error window that says to place "-fredhtl" tag onto the properties path line in the shortcut.  Error: line path in the target box is not valid.  What to do?

When I work the quick start in documentation, and try launch FS is says it can't find the file.  Is there a list of what the paths are supposed to be? 

I searched all over Hard Light and found nothing. If you can help or at least point me in the right direction you have my thanks.

First of all, you should get 3.6.10 RC3. 3.6.9 is really old.
Make sure you download the updated launcher as well.

Install them by unpacking the Launcher and the executables into your FS2 folder, then select the 3.6.10 build in the Launcher. It will complain about an unrecognized flag, but that's not a problem. As for FRED, the -fredhtl flag is no longer needed in 3.6.10.

Yep, both of the problems you report have been fixed in 3.6.10.

IIRC, it enabled HTL rendering in FRED. This is now enabled by default.

Just finished downloading 3.6.10 R3.  I'll go away for a while and try to install it.  Thanks and will write back if I can get it running.

Shouldn't be difficult to 'install' - as has been said, just unzip/unrar it into your Freespace 2 directory and select it in the launcher.

Yahoo! 3.6.10 R3 is installed and running, however I tried to load Fred, and all I got was an error screen that told me I must be running Freespace from another directory.  What I did notice, is that it used "FreeSpace", with the "S" being capitalized.  Is there file names and things, that I have to change the spelling.  So, so far no Fred.  Any ideas what I my have done worng?

If you have FS2/FSO installed to My Documents or the desktop, move it somewhere else, like C:\games\freespace2\ .

The FSO and FRED executables must be in your \freespace2\directory.

It's RC3. Not a release; a release candidate.

Freespace/FSO/FRED 3.6.10 RC3 (sorry for calling it a release) are all in C:\Games\Freespace2 directory.  Even FRED 3.6.9 started to work as they are all installed now.  (see first post in this thread)  So something else is going on, I think.

You need to place the executables directly in C:\Games\Freespace 2, not in an FSO sub-directory.

Are you running FRED directly or via a shortcut? Sometimes with a shortcut you have to edit the properties to make sure that the Start In option points at the folder you have the game in.

I've tried it both ways.  I only have one directory, and it's C:\Games\Freespace2.  I'll try to run it again and see if I can copy out the error, and paste it here.  Thanks so much for your help.  Starting to get a little frustrated.

Okay, so I give up.  I have the GOG version, and have completed the progressive installs of 3.6.9, 3.6.10 and 3.6.10 RC3.  So now, I will uninstall everything and re-install FS2-GOG, and then go straight to 3.6.10 RC3.
Does that sound like the way to go?  After this I'm not sure where to go.

You shouldn't be 'installing' anything when it comes to the .exes. They're each standalone versions of the game engine. You just put them in the game directory (as long as they're unzipped/rared).

So, yes, going straight to 3.6.10 RC3 should do the trick fine, as long as you then select 3.6.10 RC3 in the Launcher and run it from there...

Can you give us the error you're getting one more time? And a screenshot of your Freespace 2 directory?

It worked.  Cleared everything out, and started all over again.  Both Freespace and FRED worked first time out.  So I still don't know what went wrong.  Maybe someday I'll figure it out.
