Black screen in fred 2open.
Ok so I'm new at this thing, so forgive me if this sounds stupid, I used to play this back in the day messed around with fred some. But after I've seen whats been done by other people, my interest was re- kindled but one problem. I go into fred 2 open (i've even tried using the launcher that came with it) it open all the menues are there I even think I placed a few ships.  But the display screen is blank NO grids, no dots, no ship models... Grr... i tried turning things on and off in the menus no luck. and if I R click on the display screen the pop up menu comes up, but I still can't see anything. Maybe it's a vista problem maybe My computers to ****ty I don't know, but more then likely i'm just missing something, something I've been searching to find but have had no luck so now I'm asking.  If you know something tell me please.  The whole reason I want to use it is so I can make something with the ships I downloaded...  so any advice for that would be very much appreciated

that doesnt really answer my question I have fs2 open 3.6.10 and it came with fred 2 and the launcher and if I remember right media vp or something like that already:confused:is there something there I need to to download that I don't have already.

Do you have FS2 installed?  Are you running the FRED2_Open 3.6.10 exe or just the FRED2 one?  the FRED2 is the old retail one. 

Do you have show grid turned on in the view options?

running fred 2 open yeah i have freespace2 retail i got it at gog because my second disk was cracked and i couldn't reinstall the old school way.

Make sure everything's checked under 'view' (well, everything relevant - ship models and grid and stuff.) Select the Ulysses in the ship menu, hold down left ctrl, left-click a few times.

did that I honestly would kill just to get the grid, I'm familiar with fred at least regular fred. I even tried creating a shortcut and running it in xp compatibility mode just in case

Well, hrm. Could you run a debug build of FRED, then post the FS2open log file from your /FreeSpace2/data folder?

(I assume FRED generates debug logs...)

It does. It's called fs2_open.log, and will be in the data folder, as usual.

I opened it in fred debug still no luck it didn't show the dialog box. I did descover I have the ability to place and edit ships, they still don't appear on screen but the mouse icon detects them and will bring up the pop up menu, but the models and grid and everything else is non existant cant even get dots.  this is the text out the fs2_open file you told me about, I don't know if it has anything, because everything works but the images. But if it helps you help me, then i'm willing to try anything...

Your graphics card isn't great, but that shouldn't matter.

"Found root pack 'C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\00-raynor.vp' with a checksum of 0x2b4cd582" - get that out of there. You should only have retail files in your root directory.

Try moving the whole directory to C:\Games\FreeSpace 2.

Nothing in there jumps out screaming wrongness to me....

That being said, are the drivers for your 3d card up to date?

Assuming you're running with Aero enabled, try this: If you right-click on the FRED2_Open executable, go to the properties menu, and select "Disable Desktop composition" in the compatibility options, does that help?
