HI All,

i have the Problem that Freespace dont run on my system. My System is Debian Lenny with kernel 2.6.30 and a Nvidia 8600GT card.

I installed freespace over http://www.fsoinstaller.com/ with the java installer. My directory now looks like this:

I tried to execute freespace2:

cd ~/Freespace2
./fs2_openBut i get the error:

./fs2_open: line 71: /home/markus/FreeSpace2/fs2_open.bin: cannot execute binary file
./fs2_open: line 71: /home/markus/FreeSpace2/fs2_open.bin: Erfolg
"Erfolg" is german and means "success".

Any idea ?

We really must destroy Tureys installer.

Hi Feldmaus,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. There're some problems with Tureys installer on all platforms.
Addtionally, it installs fairly out of date files now.

I haven't run FSO under linux, but one of our friendly linux guys should be over fairly shortly to help you out!

Hi there. From your directory listing, it doesn't look like you have FreeSpace 2 installed. You need the retail files to get FSO to work; If you don't have it, GOG sells it for cheap. After you've installed FS2, go here and download 3.6.10 Final. Delete all the other FSO executables.
Should that not work, you can try building your own binary from source, instructions on how to obtain the sourcecode can be found here.

To install mods, campaigns and other stuff, follow the instructions and guidelines described here. Do not use the installer. It will cause issues.

In short, feldmanus, Turey's installer installs FSO, but not the core files that FS2 requires. It's like getting a new car body and all the bells and whistles but without the engine.

Actually, it's the other way around. The installer delivers the engine, a frame and the chromey bits, but the real bodykit is sold separately.

i bought this Game and downloading this Game now. :-) The file is an windows executable file with *.exe extension. Do i have to install it first via wine or can i extract this file via wine or some tool?
I am not a fan of windows so i have only linux and wine on my PC. The installation instruction,http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,47640.0.html, seems for windows user, is there another one for Linux user ?

As a matter of fact, you can.

So, use wine to run the installer, copy all files ending with .vp (except tangoA and tangoB) to your FS directory, and you're ready to go. Follow the instructions in the Installation for real men thread, there's not that much of a difference between Windows and Linux in that regard.
