So I was following the getting started guide, and it says to update to 1.2 with the patch, and when I start the patcher it gives me an "Error installing iKernel.exe: (0x10000)"  error.  i'm not sure quite what i'm doing wrong.... anyone have ideas?

Try running it in compatibility mode and as an admin. 

If that doesn't work go to Kara's FAQ (in my sig) and download the HotU Pack.

admin + compatibility didn't work at all, so i am trying the HoTU v1.2 c-pack

So do I but I think what he is saying is the patch won't run on Vista 64.

OK we are getting off track here.  Let's start over:

He was trying to install the 1.2 patch on Vista 64 but it would not run
Compatibility mode and run as admin apparently didn't work
I suggested downloading the HotU pack which is 1.2
He hasn't posted back which most likely means the HotU did work.

So why are we still discussing this?

of course windows is multi compatible. I do not think this means what you think it means.
However, Vista 64s security mechanisms may need to be circumvented here. I.e., don't install the game to C:\Program Files, but to c:\Games or somewhere else.
