Texures/Missiles look funny? Other problems
Hi. A few minutes into playing a mission textures for ships (mostly Shivan ships) and missiles distort and this causes the game to lag drastially. It goes anywhere from a playable 45-50 FPS to a dismal 4-10 FPS when this happens. When missiles fire they look like giant boxes rather than weapons. A stranger problem occurs as well. After installing the new rereleased VPs, some missions cause the game to crash. I assume it was core_VP, as that never happend before I got the edited missions. For some reason the game keeps getting buggier and less stable all the time. For example, the mission "Exodus" ALWAYS crashes when in debugger now, even though I could play through it before (with some technical difficulty due to the buggy texures). It said something about missing LODs?
 
 I would have reported this on Mantis, but for the life of me I can't get them to send me a confirmation email. I've tried 3 times with no success so I had to post here as a last resort.

Those don't belong in the main FS2 directory.  Homesick should be in it's own mod folder.  MV_Advanced goes in the MediaVP's folder if it is the current version.  The 3610patch also belongs in the MediaVP directory.

That problem sounds exactly like what happened to me when I tried to play with MV_Advanced on a not-so-good Radeon X300.  It's basically your video card's way of saying that it can no longer cope with the graphical demands that are being placed on it.  Removing MV_Advanced should clear things up.  You'll lose the extra-shiny effects that it provides, but it's far better to have the game be actually playable, and the rest of the MediaVPs in concert are no slouches themselves.

This means shaders will not work. You need -no_glsl and remove -normal. Also, remove -mipmap.

As previously stated, 3610_Patch.vp goes into "C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\mediavps\" as does MV_Advanced.vp if you want to play with Advanced features. Homesick.vp should go into a folder called "C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\Homesick\".

Also, re-download MV_Advanced. It's checksum line should read "MV_Advanced.vp' with a checksum of 0xd06bf123"
Please to note though that I really don't think with that card that you SHOULD play with MV_Advanced, but as I don't know what other hardware you have, maybe you can, or maybe you can't.

If you notice any performance problems (and you likely will) remove MV_Advanced from the mediavps folder and try again.

Thank you for the replies. Turning off mip/normal mapping sometimes delays the error, but missiles still fire as giant blocks at some point and reduces the framerate. Same with the textues. As for MV_Advanced, I'm aware of where it goes but I moved it out of the mediaVPs folder because it was an older version. I didn't think there would be a problem if I just kept it in C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2. I'll remove it now. Homesick is in its own folder and the patch is in mediaVPs. -no_glsl helped a lot but my original problems still keep happening. Oh yeah. I just remembered, when anything jumps in the warp effect is very distorted, much in the same way that textures are. These problems are all related? Should I just turn *everything* off and leave it at that?

If you left MV_Advanced in your main FreeSpace 2 directory, it's still being read by the game, as the root directory is the final place that the game looks for media content.  Again, if you move any form of MV_Advanced completely out of your FS2 folder, the problem should (hopefully) resolve itself, with no need to disable any other features.
