Dang Flaser beat me to it by about 10 minutes, I was going to comment about the lost VRAM too.  You shouldn't need to use that much space with DDS if a usable compression can be found.  At least one of them should work sufficiently better than PCX.  Even if switching from PCX to compressed DDS degrades somewhat, what about an uncompressed format to compressed DDS vs to PCX?  I bet several DDS compressions look better after that than PCX does.  Switching compressions without using the source images will always degrade quality.

Well, I just did a quick test. I converted one of my interfaces (Which usually use tga and u888 or u8888 dds files) to use dxt3 with nvdxt. While there are obvious savings in terms of HD space being used, it also rendered the background images invisible. So, unless I messed up the nvdxt command, this would be a no-go for me.

Grrr, I didn't see there was a second page. I was responding to the last post on the first page as though it were the last post in the thread.

It may take some experimenting but I really think there has to be a compression method that produces usable results.  With all the different ways to compress them for in game use, there's got to be something that works sufficiently well.  Could it be an issue with the implementation of the code causing bg images to be invisible?  Or if not then flags could be a very likely suspect.  I'd be curious to see if HT had the time to fiddle with this stuff, he's normally very apt at finding good texture conversion settings.

I think the issue here is that those images aren't textures, really. Is dxt really usable for anything that does have dimensions that aren't power-of-two?
