first shivan encounter mission
sorry, i don't remember the names of these things.  the one where you are escorting the science cruiser and you first see the shivans.   in my recent playthrough, the cruiser actually made it to the node unscathed, where it proceded to sit idlely while i took abuse from the shivan fighters.  after many, many minutes, it eventually deployed its escape pod, which departed.  i assume this is due to the mission design fully intending for the crusier to bite it, but methinks there should be the provision on the off-chance the cruiser DOES make it.  apparantly it IS possible.  or would changing that be against the philosophy of not modifying any kind of gameplay?  it wouldn't affect the story in any way (just require a small debrief edit) and would possibly shave a few minutes of tossing rocks at shivans.

Re: first shivan encounter mission
are you playing FS original or the port to FS2? because I believe there was an issue in the original where by you are not supposed to succeed so no warp out was scripted for the Plato not sure if that was corrected for Port

Re: first shivan encounter mission
Yeah, for whatever reason, the Port version of this mission usually winds up ending with the Plato making it through to the node unscathed.  Unfortunately, its destruction was fairly consistent in FS1, so there was never any self-destruct scripted for the mission.  I'm not sure if the Port team has resolved the issue yet or not.

Re: first shivan encounter mission
It's one of those things that was compensated for in the first release of the Port, and was then obliterated when all the missions were directly re-ported from the original FSMs by Goober and his FRED2Oopen tool.

Seems like we should start 'fixing' them again.

It probably isn't hard to do, except it might be somewhat jarring for the cruiser to explode at, say 38 hull or so.

It could be made to warp out, but there's no debriefing audio for that.

Re: first shivan encounter mission
you could just cut out the section of debrief that says it died.  that might also cut out the "primary goal accomplished" type stuff too, but personally i can live with that for the mission working better.
either that, or see if you can actually get the bombers to attack the crusier.  they just flew around aimlessly when i played.

just finished up the campaign tonight.  excellent work to all involved
the return to earth was a nice touch.  except for the giantass green square around it :P.

Yeah, no, we're not gonna mess with a work of art. We'll just compensate (again).

And the Earth's been fixed. It'll come with the 3.2 release.

I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta
