ST: R Invisible freighters in first mission
 AaaaAAaaAAagghh!!!! *rips hair out*

Ok, got that out of the way.

 I spent all night learning, reading and downloading FSO just to get ST:R so I can continue onto FS2, which yes I also do have the retail version of.
(I played retail ST a long time ago, horrible, horrible game...and my computer refuses to play it with retail FS1 now, not that I don't blame it).

So after using Turrey's downloader, I found some stuff was off (Launcher wouldn't run) so I  redownloading an updated version of ST:R off the Freespace Port homepage (http://fsport.hard-light.net/website/str/), then I was finally able to play the game! (Yay!!)  

Start Mission 1: "Silence All Voices"....

WHAT?!? The freighters I'm supposed to chase down are INVISIBLE!!! I head towards where they are located, but all of sudden I "collide" into either one and primary weapons are no good in hitting them. Missles somehow find a way to hit though, but I don't carry enough to hit and my wingmen are no better. "Mission Failed".  

So...HELP?!?

A couple notes:

  • I'm running off of Vista 64-bit
  • I have 3.16.12 mediavps, and fsport 3.1.1
  • Whenever my HUD targets the Aries or Pisces ships, it targets the Laser subsystem instead of the ship itself.
  • There are 2 tiny engine lights, no matter how far or "close" I get.
  • Nothing else in the game seems to be off, I'm able to quickly dispatch other enemies.
  • Both FS1 and FS2 (played from the Launcher) have no problems...so far.

When providing instruction please provide detailed "how-to-fix/find the problem", as I am still quite a noob at this stuff.

I think you may need to get the 3.6.10 MVPs and FSPort MediaVPs and put them in a folder called 'mediavps' and use those with ST:R.

The 3.6.12 MVPs release has been a huge cluster**** in terms of backwards compatibility.

I'm sure more helpful people will be along shortly, but yea.
Use this.

Also, ST:R hasn't been updated for the .12 / 3.2 stuff yet and I don't know if it'll work immediately without conflicts (again, more helpful people will be here soon I imagine ;P)

Sort the FSPort stuff out and see if it still does it.
If it does and no one offers a solution, go with Battuta's suggestion of using the .10 and 3.1.1 stuff for ST:R.

Yeah, until the FSPort people get their releases fixed, I'd recommend either getting the old versions, or swaiting.

Incidentally, please read the FSO FAQ stickied in this board. Especially the last post. An fs2_open.log would have helped us to identify the problem (and the solution!) more accurately.

Hm...when I switch to debug mode to make this log as per the directions of the FSO FAQ's page (fs2_open_3_6_12d_INF.exe)  to find the problem, it crashes before opening.

System specs:
Vista 64-bit SP2
Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU, T5850 @ 2.16GHz
4.00 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8400M

Ah. You have the 3.1.1 FSPort installed. You need to update it to the 3.2 FSPort, found here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70941.0

Read the post, and follow the install instructions carefully.
