Suggestions for a good joystick?
Hey guys,
To date I've been playing FS with a mouse and keyboard. I've heard murmurs around here that the experience is enhanced a lot by a joystick. So I'd like to get your opinions on what a good joystick is to buy. Not anything ridiculously pricey, mind you. So yeah. Suggest away!
Thanks for your help,

CommanderDJ
[16:57] <CommanderDJ> What prompted the decision to split WiH into acts?
[16:58] <battuta> it was long, we wanted to release something
[16:58] <battuta> it felt good to have a target to hit
[17:00] <RangerKarl> not sure if talking about strike mission, or jerking off
[17:00] <CommanderDJ> WUT
[17:00] <CommanderDJ> hahahahaha
[17:00] <battuta> hahahaha
[17:00] <RangerKarl> same thing really, if you think about it

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
Maybe I'm just a n00b, but I always had trouble playing FS with a joystick. I used to be a pretty big flight sim-er so I have a yoke and a couple different joysticks, but for some reason I find it a lot easier and precise aiming with a keyboard/mouse. I'd be interested to see what other people think though...

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
I'm using an old WingMan force 3D and I consider it very good.

If you can find it, either Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2, or Precision Pro.

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
My stance is that if I'm not playing a sim game with my Saitek X52, then I'm clearly doing something wrong. There's been absolutely no match for the enhanced sense of immersion a stick like this adds so far.

(And if it does ever break, I've always got the Steel Battalion controller in my closet as a back-up. ;))

Edit: Mind you, this does kind of go against the "not too pricey" request... ack, just noticed the X52's still go for over $100 in a lot of circles. My apologies.

I bought a Saitek wireless Evo joystick, and it works great.  Not sure if you can find them anymore.

I've been eying this for a week or so:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CXYMFS

It's a budget HOTAS stick for under $40. Very tempting indeed, especially if I decide to get back into flight sims...

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
i currently fly with a saitek x45, but i found something a little smaller like my old cyborg 3d (cyborg evo still around?) a little easier to control with, if not as fully featured.  since i don't play multi, i'll take immersion/fun over precision of mouse.

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
I never liked the Saitek X52. The base sliding gimble plate is plastic so it always chafed when moving around. I would get these really. jerky. movements. unless I applied some lube which still didn't help that much. (THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID)

I sold it and replaced it with a Saitek X52 Pro which uses a metal sliding gimble plate. Very smooth and precise.

Has anyone used the Logitech G940 force feedback throttle and stick with Freespace? I'm also wondering how the force sensing Saitek X65F plays with Freespace's frantic gameplay.

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
I found a Logitech Extreme 3d Pro on ebay for $10 and it's worked out perfectly.
Did you hear that fellas? She says I have a Meritorious Unit.

I used to have a WingMan force 3D but found it a bit tricky to use.

I now have my trusty Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, which hopefully will be killing Shivans with me for many years to come.

Those who don't know, never will, and if they don't, I gave them no reason to pay attention to it ;)

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
I still think that Microsoft's best stick was their original Sidewinder 3D Pro.

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
I would recommend a Sidewinder.  I've been using a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 for awhile now.  Got the joystick shortly after they stopped selling them.  Took forever to find one.  Your best bet for finding one now is Ebay.

This.  I've had mine for who knows how long now, and I still <3 it to death.

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
I use the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro nowadays as well, but can also vouch for the aforementioned Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro and Precision Pro.
10 years ago, a schoolmate of mine used to have them and they worked great for Flight- and Mechsimulators. :)

Re: Suggestions for a good joystick?
