Now, some kind of featured mod of the moment, or gallery of modded ships accessed similarly to the way random screenshots are grabbed, might work. If people want, I can have a look at implementing something.

Well, I've had a look. and found what I want to do. I've asked Goober to implement this. What this iwll allow us to do is to put a rating bar onto the article for every mod on the wiki, and get a user rating for them. Moreover, we can then generate top lists - most likely top 5 or 10, to be placed on the Modding Portal page. It can also be used to generate a separate list for top rated campaigns. This would be the first step in a few other ideas I have to improve the modding portal, and make it generally more useful.

Now, I had planned to just get this feature going as a bit of a surprise for everyone, but Goob has requested I make this thread prior to implementing it to make sure nobody has any strong objections to the system. Personally, I think that it'd be a great addition to the wiki, and it'll give a little bit more recognition to the very best mods in our collection. It might even spur on a bit more effort towards very high quality asset creation - after all, everyone likes their hard work to be recognized.

So, opinions anyone? It'll be a week before anything can be done (Goob is on holidays) so there's plenty of time.

IMHO, such a system is rather useless. Who will rate the campaigns? The problem I see is that the wiki only gets visited for research purposes; there aren't that many people who just browse it. You'll end up with the few top-dog campaigns staying on top, while most others will go by unrated.

Well personally, I'd rate it. Perhaps such a feature would encourage people to browse the wiki more often? Would a trial period be feasible?

There's enough inter-project hatred and loathing already, we don't need to add fuel to the fire. The great mods seem to get enough exposure from word of mouth really.

Having broached the idea in IRC, the negatives seem to be focussing on rating campaigns. So let's consider this as two issues - we can implement the tool and use it to rate campaigns and/or individual mods (ships I mean, new models). So think of them individually if you like.

[EDIT]Just to clarify, I'm personally still pro the idea for both campaigns and mods - I'm all about the quantifying of subjective opinion - but I'm happy enough with it going to just mods if there're really strong objections.

Those do exist. See Vassago's Dirge for a decent example.

There wouldn't be enough votes to be representative of actual quality, not to mention players pay attention to different things, which cannot be put into numbers.

FSMods already has a rating feature. Take a tour around the downloads section and see how popular the rating system is. If we were a vast community, such a system would be useful.

I actually think Mobius is pretty cool, if anything I've been kinda hard on what he's shown w/r/t Inferno of late. But all in all...it's just not worth taking risks with it, y'know?

I don't know what you're refering to, exactly, but please forgive me for saying that if it has anything to do with Inferno then it's 101% wrong. And let's not discuss the subject any further.

What I did here was just go through the first few pages of the release thread and post every reaction I found, except I cut about half of the positive ones and tried to emphasize the negative ones to make it a bit more balanced.

Does that seem fair to you?
