In my world of sleepers, everything will be erased.
I'll be your religion, your only endless ideal.
Slowly we crawl in the dark.
Swallowed by the seductive night.

Well...I'm starting to figure out where the stories come from.  I started my new world, did the usual first few days' worth of punching trees and digging a survival hole, and started figuring things out.  I'm set up in a fairly low hillside, next to a couple of lakes and what looks like some swamp-type land a bit further off.  The first notable event involved my stepping right outside my door at night and running smack-dab into a Creeper, which exploded and dug a nice crater in my front yard.  So that was fun, though it didn't do much more than freak me out.  What did do more was when I decided to expand my hidey-hole a bit, and punched through one wall to discover a small cave with a seemingly-bottomless pit in it.  Me being me, I walk over to investigate...and fall into oblivion.  There goes everything I spent the start of my game making.  And even better, I respawn in the middle of the pitch-black night and immediately start getting attacked by something, so I ran around wildly until I managed to find my room again.  I was basically back to square one.  Guess I learned the lesson about keeping backup supplies in a chest nice and early.

Oh, and the really fun part now is that I can't remember where the hell I mined the coal I used to make my torches, so I'm down to whatever's on my walls at the moment.  I did just stumble across the existence of charcoal in the wiki, so I guess there's always that.

Jeb tweeded not long ago that the login server is having...  issues...  again.  Give it some time, you are more than likely not the only one having problems.

And quite literally a few seconds ago, Notch tweeted "I heard about the session login issues. Looking into it."

Daw....  The early-game struggle for light was something I really enjoyed about earlier versions of Minecraft.  Charcoal feels too easy by comparison.

What you're likely to discover, as you continue to play, is that there's a surprising amount of progression in this game, even without the skill/experience system implemented yet.  As you gather more (and better) resources, you'll find yourself less and less vulnerable to the hazards of the world.  For me, I start out hiding in a glorified pile of mud.  Later, I built a proper shelter for night.  Eventually, I reached a point where I could harvest what I needed without even having to venture out during the day.  Finally, in my last singleplayer world, I completely turned the tables on the threats of the environment by digging out an underground mob grinder.

...and if you haven't by that point, that's where you'll find yourself looking into the multiplayer component.  ;)

Minecraft is being piece of **** for no reason for me. It's crashes the moment I start it up and makes bull**** claims of my "video card drivers are outdated" when if that were true, how did I play Crysis the other night? I also updated Java, but that didn't help. Any ideas? Because I quite sure that from what the thingy said when I opened in browser, I believe Minecraft may actually have been updated again or something and this new update has officially made it incompatible with my graphics card.

why run the browser version? just run the "standalone"

you might get moderately better performance.

Tried to make that Aether thing work, just got an error screen (not the black screen) despite removing META-INF, having NO other mods and getting all the needed files (even 1.7.3 versions) and doing as told. Probably has to do with some hidden file or w/e in roaming being 1.8.1 orientated. Gave up, meh.

It's not working because Aether hasn't been updated to work on 1.8.1 yet. The version you got is for 1.7.3   :P

In general, the latest version of minecraft is never backwards compatible with mods for older versions.

Sara was using the 1.7.3 version (she said so in her post :P)

I gave Aether a try on 1.7.3 as well with no luck, I think it's because the stuff like the current Modloader etc are written for 1.8, even if you do have a compatible version of the Aether itself.

I'll take a look at it with my old 1.7.3 build :) I'm also not sure how the 're-released' 1.7.3 with the verification removed will handle the Aether, fortunately I backed up the original before I updated to 1.8 :)

Yeah, I can definitely see that being the case.  I haven't even thought about building much above-ground as of yet; I'm still trying to get myself settled, and this big early setback didn't help.  At this point, what I'd really like is to grab enough wool to make a bed, since at least then I'll be able to change my spawn point and not have nights be as much of an issue.  As it stands, I'm sitting there cowering at the gaping hole at the back of my cave, wondering if something worse than the zombie I killed is going to crawl out of it. :p

And I'm definitely planning on getting involved with multiplayer, since seeing what you guys have done on rhx's server was my primary motivation for buying the game in the first place. :D I don't think I'm familiar enough with a lot of the finer points of building to jump in and make a real contribution, but I might hop on in the next few days and take a tour.

For my part, I found this is one of the few games that for me improved with Multiplayer experience. There's always people around willing to teach you new tricks and techniques, which is especially useful with Redstone stuff, but the wiki is full of little snippets that make the game more interesting :)

I find it impossible to play single player now, I get bored not seeing the world around me evolve. When I play multi, there's usually several projects on the go that I can help with, new things to see and to inspire me.

Ugh...I managed to get legitimately lost in my own world and had to spend a night in a little cube of dirt.  I wound up having to attempt to use the debug mode world coordinates to find my way back to spawn...which didn't work because my spawn isn't located where I thought it was.  Plus I've now managed to derp right off of a few cave ledges, losing some useful stuff in the process.  On the upside, I finally got myself a bed, so now I'll always spawn back home if/when I screw up in the future.  I've also discovered that those shafts within my little cave head down to this whole rather large cave system, and after some really awkward platform/stairs building and a fortuitous fall into water, I can start poking around down there.  I've already found copious amounts of coal and a bit of iron, so it's a good start.

I did. And as an update, it seems that Minecraft refuses to start up whenever I have my internet connection working.

Stupid game! Work, damn you! I didn't pay $12.35 for you to break!  :banghead:
