IT WAS GREAT! Despite the lack of Zods, it was really great. And the Herc 2 is a nice ship. Maybe not most beautiful, maybe not the most fearsome looking, but it looks as it should and it does it's job.

Yes, I remember that. It was a piece of cover art for a document about the Herc Mk2 written in the style of an aircraft profile, a bit like one of those Squadron/Signal Publications that you can get for real aircraft. It also covered the Ares too, but I wasn't able to really understand much of it. The Apollo is, frankly, a better looking ship. It looks smaller, older, frailer, and generally better shot up. The Herc 2 is so freaking smooth, random particle trails don't do the job.

Not to mention the fact that the Apollo gives it extra 'WHOA!!!' factor, since everyone here, and in my case all my friends, have seen the FS1 intro (I stuffed it down their throats). So you see the imagery from the FS1 intro, and the view starts panning away from where Ash (or whoever) died, and then 'ZOMG'  in swoops what is, metaphorically, SCP/FSO/MVPs. In a way, you're showing all the old stuff, that we all recognize for Freespace, an old game, that's dead. The bit from the FS1 intro ends, and then in comes FSO to the rescue, resulting in a massive battle that shows off everything the game has to offer.

When I was younger I remember being convinced the Herc 2 was a step down from the original due to having 2 less gunbanks (how many gunbanks a ship had was basically my way of deciding a ship's worth at the time).

I like the Herc II. It's one of the classic FS2 ship designs. The Media VP does change the look a bit, whether or not it's good is up to the individual.

I too am a Herc II advocate. Why? In some regards, I do like its appearance, though it does have its own share of problems. Moreover, though, it might be from an in-game relation of what the fighter does. In that sense, it's probably why I loved the Y-Wing - it was the instant death-note to TIE Fighters in X-Wing.

There are some odd details in the updated model, but in all honesty, their subtleties work with the original design in my opinion. Those details could have been better worked out in my opinion, but I'm not too worried right now about those. I did have some artwork a while back which demonstrated a rather sleek Herc II, but I'm not all that impressed with the piece now.

I thought they also continued the transition between the Mk. I and Mk. II rather well, better than a lot of other stuff I've seen - there's a clear lineage between the two models.
