Because I just got here!

Seriously though, Freespace(1,2) was and is my favorite game. I just got lucky FSO happened.

And... yeah you all are ok too   :D

Well, why not?
Sure I don't visit this place too often right now, but that's subject to change near September.

I'm hugely impressed by the modding community and have high hopes for the future.  (If I ever get rich, I'll buy all FreeSpace-related IP from Interplay and re-release it CC-BY-SA.  That's a promise.)

Out of curiosity why do you seem to make it a rule to make whatever you post, orange?
With the rapid increase of FS fan-made campaigns, we're giving the GTVA a harder time with more violence and genocide.

Because he's been around long enough?

Because that's just who he is?

And because, have you ever seen a non-orange Bengal Tiger?

Case, made.

BengalTiger: Glad to still see you around these parts, mate.

So you guys found my non-orange brother :P

I don't really remember why I took this color, maybe it's related to the orange glows on the Tiigran-Merisst ships...

Re: Why are you all still here?

I should have seen that coming. White tigers can happen in any region, Bengal or Siberian.

White Bengal Tigers are, last I knew, pretty damn rare though.

I'm still here because I've been dying to get a new bloody computer that can run these shmexy graphics. And now that day has come

Time to finally be able to install and play FSO! (without the strange extruding polygons)

Re: Why are you all still here?
Funny story why I'm still here.

I was telling an online friend about the greatest space sim ever - Freespace 2. In the process of google image searching 'Freespace 2', trying to find some screenshots that didn't make the outdated graphics too obvious, I came across this screenshot:

I thought this was a photoshop at first, until I saw this:

 :eek2:

One google search later, for 'Freespace 2 graphics update', and I was back. I downloaded the installer, and I returned to Freespace 2.

I'll rephrase that then. Polygons that try to be beam effects
It's similar to you taking a vertex, then pulling that vertex ten thousand miles away

That thing where, after a while, the ships in the game start turning into pointy, streaky eldritch abominations, with parts of models occasionally disappearing(the Myrmidon would end up with a thruster floating in mid-airspace)?

I had that with my old W98/Radeon 9200 machine, at least until I started fiddling with the Troubleshooting section in the launcher. That could have been a cool effect to intentionally invoke for a Transcend/Sync-style campaign.

Yes, exactly that, only I had a graphics card embedded in the motherboard. No troubleshooting could fix that

Re: Why are you all still here?
Good to see that FS community is still alive and kicking. I have been around Freespace since the late 90's when FS2 got released and I fell in love with the game immediately. Since the I was a staff member of Ross 128, VW and HLP. In recent years I pop in sometimes to see what is happening in the community and to install FSO to play thorugh the main FS2 campaign. Love the game and love the community and I will stick around as long  as I can.

Re: Why are you all still here?
Conflict: Freespace came into my life in 1998 as an OEM (yet full) version with my oldest brother's new IBM Aptiva computer when I was around 12 years old, spurred my interest and talent in writing, modding and editing and returned to me in full force when I found the SCP project in I believe 2006. Been primarily lurking while trying to learn more and been very active for around 18 months now working on my own project. Until it's done at the very least I won't go anywhere else ;)

Also authoring one of the most viewed Freespace 2 videos on Youtube I'm feeling there's quite an audience to present my work to, almost like owing someone or something a major contribution.

Re: Why are you all still here?
Why am I still here ? in fact I play this game since I'm 8 (I'm french, so I didn't know any of english at this age, but the first freespace has been released in France in french version, and I bought it [my grandmother bought it for me I mean]), and now I'm near my 18, so I have been all this time rocked with the FS Universe (especially FS1 with very bad graphics, however that didn't matter to me :) )

But I was playing Pokemon too when I was 8, and now I don't play it anymore, so there must be something on Freespace that I love.
I think it's the accumulation of amazing dogfights and stories that make me love Freespace. Though it is a game that is very very difficult to begin with (all of these keys makes the game difficult to apprehend, I remember I was playing on very easy and with automatic targetting and automatic speed enabled the first times), once the player has learned the different binds, the game looks just wonderful to him.

And the whole work of the hard light team makes the game more and more beautiful, adding new stories to the original
