Re: Why are you all still here?
Shadows of Lylat doesn't get enough love too.

I think we're talking released.

Think.

And actually, come to think of it, it's four. WCS.

Re: Why are you all still here?
When we've only got two TCs and one of them is underexposed I think it's a fair point to make.

Technically we've got three, but nobody loves Inferno anymore.

Inferno isn't a TC and never will be, it's a FreeSpace mod set in the FreeSpace universe.

Re: Why are you all still here?

It replaced pretty much all the assets with its own.  Spoon left in some loggie ships, Inferno kept some head anis. It's certainly the same or a greater level of modification of the game. It may be telling an FS story in an FS engine, but splitting such hairs of philosophy in comparison to actual use of assets seems...silly.

And for that matter it's been openly acknowledged as such before by more than one person and was one of the two examples used before WoD or WCS released anything. Your personal opinion on how to define such things is noted, but remains only opinion.

Wasn't aware that, when one TC is mentioned, all TCs have to be mentioned.
They don't have to but come on. Two released TC's. Each can be expressed with a three-letter abbreviation. How much more trouble could it be to write three extra letters?

Because Inferno hasn't released anything in ages. :P But, if you're going to count Inferno as a TC then Ancient-Shivan War should be counted too. Actually when I pimp FS2 I always makes sure to have a run through a couple of ASW missions. When it comes to drawing people in ASW can do it very well because even with the b0rk3d shinemapping it still has by far the most photogenic ships ever to grace FS, particularly the high poly Achladia and Akrotiri, and that gets peoples attention (plus it's very well done in general).

So what about you? What the deuce are you still doing here 12 years on?

I discovered FS2 back in 2003 while I was cruising HOTU for abandonware, obviously this was long before Good Old Games made it possible to actually buy the thing legally for a reasonable price. Since I have a thing for space this grabbed me immediately and not long after I stumbled onto HLP. Back then HTL was recently introduced and FSO's Direct 3D support was better than OpenGL's, there weren't any hi poly models and new effects were still not implemented. This was also before Axem became the king of FS comedy with the hit Just Another Day series and a master campaign designer with Vassago's Dirge. So, since then I've been playing off and on but I always eventually come back because of the ever increasing awesomeness of FSO and excellent mods like Vassago's Dirge, Blue Planet AoA, it's framerate killing sequel War in Heaven, Sync, Transcend, Meditations on the Abyss, and so many others. I can see it all now.......

Ours was a proud forum. And always the strongest. For decades our mods expanded. For so long we could imagine ourselves alone on the internet. For so long never did we encounter other awesome games. And before long we could see the day when our FS engine limitations would have been reached, and there would be no more awesome mods. And then we discovered FSO. It gave us the awesomeness and it gave us the internet. And we saw other awesome games, and we subdued it or we crushed it. In months the elimination of hundreds of years of codetime on a similar but slower path. With FSO our forum would surely know no boundries.

Re: Why are you all still here?
I barely FS it up anymore, combination of lack of time and waning interest levels. I leave the HLP tab open on firefox though because I enjoy some of the discussion that goes down here and after frequenting this place on more-or-less a daily basis for the last 2 and a bit years, I find it hard to let go.

Re: Why are you all still here?
Several reasons.

The first and foremost is definitely the community. For all its occasional rough edges, this place is a rare gem on the internet. Generally speaking, this place is filled with people who I wouldn't mind sharing a beer with should the chance ever come up. All else aside, this is why I'm still here. I like the people. And we have such a variety of people here from all over the world and wildly different fields of expertise, meaning that any given topic of conversation has at least a half decent chance of getting qualified input... even if you have to dig a bit to find it, at times.

Second, the game itself. I can't honestly say I play regular FS2 much any longer except for multi, but the SCP plus the many mods give it a life no commercial game could hope to match. So that new game that's just out boasts a play time of at least 20 hours? Yeah, well, we measure play time in months, thank you very much. And besides just playing, FRED and the ease of modding adds that extra dimension.

Third would be IRC. When I've got the time to check them, I like having several of the various freespace-related channels up pretty much constantly, and there are some reals gems of conversations there at times. And the fact that it's basically just rooms full of people with largely the same interests as myself doesn't hurt either.

Truth is, I still have campaign ideas rolling around, things that haven't been done; from opposing viewpoints, ways to handle the Shivans, a UEF vs. Shivans campaign that'll never see the light of day.

Why not?

Because the forum is one of the few where real smart, civilized people hang out.
With the rapid increase of FS fan-made campaigns, we're giving the GTVA a harder time with more violence and genocide.
