For those of you who aren't in the know, the News of the World is a crappy celebrity sex story driven newspaper in the UK. In recent years it has had several scandals based around allegations of hacking into phones of celebrities in order to listen to their voicemail. Recently it came to light however that they hacked into the phone of a 13 year old high profile murder victim while the police were still investigating the case and may have even deleted some of the messages.

As a result everyone seems to have turned their back on them and it looks like they'll have to close. More here :-

All that will happen is News International will release a similar paper with a different name. What annoys me is that if this had been on the other foot, with the Government found to have been hacking the phones of War dead, murdered children and terrorist victims the Murdoch Empire would be the ones leading the charge for the Prime-Minister to step down and for prosecutions to take place...

To my mind, the willingness to close down the paper before any kind of investigation is complete is pretty much an admittance of culpability.

I'm pro anything that weakens NewsCorp, so this is good news. Hopefully it shames the UK government enough to get them to break up the all-too-coy relationship they have with Murdoch, maybe even stop the BSkyB bid (Don't you guys have a Foreign Investment Review Board equivalent that the government can use to block it?)

Problem is, at the moment, money speaks louder than Boards, Reviews and Comissions. This was about the only thing that would force a rethink, a general turning of public opinion against the corporation itself.

The interesting part is the fact that not that long ago the Tabloid press in general was on a high over the whole 'Super Injunction' thing, and this has pretty much ruined the support they gained over that, so it won't just be the people who will be gunning for the Murdochs, it will be other News corporations as well.

Good. I'd love to see News Corp get themselves a bloody nose over this one. The fact that they haven't sacked the editor who was in charge at the time really could bite them on the arse. To be honest, I think it would be poetic justice if we started a name and shame campaign with pictures of all the News of the World people responsible for the hacking of Milly's phone.

Thank **** for that, though as you guys have said, the greater evil is still out there but thankfully News International has often been mentioned in conjunction with it so their name has taken some tarnish from it by association.

Man, I almost wish I was in politics and enjoyed popular support, because I'd love to force the same level of transparency that the scientific journal community enjoys upon the news community. Cite any statement, and show all of their "proof" for any claims they make. With hefty fines for lies or unsubstantiated claims that aren't labelled as such.

If this is proved, then UK papers are going to have a really tough time continuing to argue self-regulation, and Murdoch can almost certainly kiss goodbye to BSkyB.
